Hello,
I got interested in bitcoins as an alternative to fiat currencies and supplement to precious metals stockpile. I have no IT background whatsoever but am interested about putting together a mining rig (or getting ready made one ie Butterfly Labs) any suggestions or words of wisdom are welcome.

Well for starters stay away from BFL at all costs. If you are new I suggest the ASICMiner USB block erupters. The price just dropped to an affordable level for small and new miners.

If you have good ATI GPU card in your computer you can start mining Litecoin right now

You would probably receive BFL unit next year if ordered now, timeframe mentioned on their website is not objective imho

Welcome. If you need any help or have any questions I would be glad to help out. I'm sure if you do some browsing the forums you will find a lot of useful information and people that know what they're talking about.
Good Luck with the rig, hope it works out for you.

Welcome, I'm new too. I've been mining for a while and have made a bit in alt-coins. Video-cards are kinda out last month as ASICs started shipping, for bitcoin anyways. If you want to buy hardware (video-cards) for altcoin mining, it wouldn't be a bad idea but the ROI is risky and I would only do it if you wanted to "help" cyptocurrencys or just enjoyed it as a break-even hobby. Cheers!

I would not get a gpu rig as they are not economical in the long run. BFL is probably not the way to go; they're not a scam but they'll probably clear their backlog by October or November. By then KnCMiner will might ship their products at a better Gh/$. BFL is about 60 dollars per Gh but KnCminer is 19 dollars per Gh. If you want a rig now, like right now, get the usb miners but I don't recommend those if you plan to make money. Sure you get those now but you might not make ROI as the Gh/$ is 1 Gh per $150.

If you are insistent on getting GPUs, then mine altcoins. However, don't forget there are a ton of GPU miners from the good old days that's going to jump to altcoins when it becomes too painful. I wouldn't go for litecoin as it's the second most popular coin and that's the next coin the poor GPU miners will go to. They'll make litecoin's mining difficulty skyrocket. I would go for devcoin or feathercoin.

Ok guys thanks for the input thus far. I did some more research and feel relieved that I have found this board before I spend $ on butterfly labs. I have found that a company in Sweden is taking orders on their rigs that are far more powerful and economical. At this moment I am considering getting a Saturn rig from them (not interested in alt coins at yet). I have noticed that many members from this forum have placed an order already. So what do you guys think about that move. My main concerns are:
will KnCminer deliver as promised will I be smart enough to hook it up and get it online (I assume it is ready out of box) how long it will be before the rig gets unprofitable because of increased difficulty levels etc. will the bitcoin hold its current value and not decrease in near future

You should read this http://www.coindesk.com/a-look-inside-kncminer/It will answer some of your questions

You should also check out xcrowd.co.uk. The $/gh is $15 per gigashash. They are going to do escrow, and the launch date is going to be 10/8/13, but I'm not sure if that's the shipping date or the pre order date but it looks legit.
