I was looking through the alternate cryptocurrency forum and there are several times where someone mentions "merged mined with BTC".

It means that the efforts of your mining activities can solve work units for more than one coin type at once.  For instance you can mine NMC and BTC at the same rate as BTC alone.  This will net you some extra coin for the same effort.
