7990 overheating

Hi,

I am trying to mine on a ATI Radeon 7990, but whatever I do, it seems to be overheating.

I have tried reducing the GPU engine to 650 (from 950), the memory clock to 1000 (from 1500), the voltage to 1.15 (from 1.2) and setting the intensity to 2.  But the temperature is still going through the roof and hitting my cut-off temperature.

One other thing I notice - since it's a dual GPU, when GPU 1 shuts off, rather than the temperature of it dropping, it still seems to continue to rise, and instead the GPU 0 temperature drops.  It's as though the card always wants to give the work to the first GPU on the card.  Does that sound right?

Regarding my case, I have a Corsair 600T with a 200mm intake fan at the front, a 200mm intake fan at the side, two 120mm outtake fans on top and a 120mm outtake fan at the rear.  Surely that should be enough?

Anyway, has anyone been able to successfully mine on this card, and if so, what config did you use?

Well I have just realised that I can't set the gpu-engine range from 0- a number, as it then just fixes it at the maximum for the card, but setting it to 300-1000 now means it stays at the correct temperature.  The only thing is I'm only getting about 700 Mh/s, whereas the card should be capable of much more.

Far to little info. Are you mining Bitcoin? Turn the memory clock as low as possible, and slowly bump up your GPU clock speed. It's not going to peak out at what ever people told you. Hardware is always a little different, and alot of people water cool. (2) 5970's I get just below 1,400mhs water cooled with one I get 750mhs and air cooled maxing out the fans with a cold ambient air temp get 600-650mhs.

If you google Bitcoin mining hardware, theres a chart elaborating on every good card out there. The problem is that GPUs don't produce shit ming Bitcoin anymore, go scrypt like Litecoin. I started at 2ghs making 0.15-0.2 a day not making 0.025.

What OS are you running?  There are tools for Windows users that help overclock or underclock these settings.  Are you keeping the case together (meaning, is the side panel still installed)?  Is there air movement around the case (not stuck in a closet somewhere)?  I had something like this running very reliably for a long time - I had the memory downclocked to 300, the fans running at 80% and a 20 inch box fan in front of the case to push more air through the case...

Well I got a decent 5970 and I also have the same issue but I solved it by matching the Memory Clock Speed with the GPU Clock speed. I agree with the reply above. As I also get 700Kh/s on cold ambient temp. air cooled. Water cooling is the way to go. Mine goes at 800Mhz GPU, 1000Mhz Mem Clock.

Try adding fans on your CPU Casing. I added 2 with mine to get the 70C mark.

Just some info i've learned from my 7990

a couple of things, one of the GPU's is always going to run 3-5C hotter than the other one( If you want more info look over at tom's hardware )

There have been reports that the shroud will warp, so keep a ear out for fan noise

These run very very hot, Mine hits 90C with 78F room temp in no case with a 20" box fan blowing on it and fans @100%(Mines overclocked)

If you are having a problem with cgminer cutting 1st gpu when overheating and its cooling off the 2nd GPU your gpu mapping is wrong you need to switch it(I'm using cgwatcher to remap mine)

Almost all the problems are seeing about reduced speed and every are due to temp of your card and cooling method

I've had to change my overheat temp much higher, and put alot of AIR on this card.

I'm running @ 1.45 Mh/s right now

Have you thought about looking into aftermarket cooling? I can't find one myself, but there MUST be some sort of cooler for this card around somewhere, right?

EK Has produced great quality waterblocks. Well it's up to you where you get those. There are some in amazon and ebay. Just buy from respectable merchants.

90c with all that!! That is frighteningly high.

Mekon, if you keep having issues with the card, it might save you more of a headache just to RMA it. It could simply be a bad card.

I am having the same issue with my 7990.  The funny part is that I had it running stable at 1.43mhs with temps 82/73 for several days, then all of a sudden it started running much hotter and rate dropped to 1.4mhs.  Nothing changed in my system, so I'm not sure what to make of it.  I have 2x 230mm and 1x 120mm exhaust and 4x 140mm intake, no difference when I leave the case open.

On my 7990 I have periodic overheating problems and the second GPU seems to get worse over time.  It will run stable at 980/1350 with a voltage of 1.050V, getting around 1300Kh/s however about once a day the second GPU slowly creeps up to around 93C which is far higher than I am comfortable with.  If I shut the rig down for 10 mins it then runs stable at around 75C GPU1 and 83C GPU2, until the temperature goes back upto over 90C for the second GPU.  I can't figure out what is going on, I think I need to change the thermal paste.
