i found some used HP PCs that have intel CPUs in them and some good HDD and SDD (i need that for my gaming PC). one of them is HP 8000 elite with a C2D E7500, 4GB DDR3 ram, some HDD and SSD and a useless PSU. What i'm worried is it's motherboard which is obviously very old and i'm not sure if it can run newer cards (like rx470 or gtx 1060) i think it's a Q45 mobo.
for now i just want to mine with one GPU (most likely a gtx 1060 6gb as Zcash seems very profitable right now)
and i don't care about the PSU and and the case, i'll get a new PSU and build my own case.

It should work with one card, I had at work old HP slim cases which I took the motherboard out and they were not Q45 ,just a bit newer and had 1 PCIEX 16 and 3 x PCIEX 1. I installed a SSD, DDR3 RAM 8GB and started mining with 1 RX 470 first and then in the end the max it could run was 3 RX 470 and could not use all 4 PCIE slots, good days , the first of my mining activity. Of course I added a 850 watt PSU gold rated from Corsair.
You should give it a try and let us know.

Shouldn't be a problem. Some of my GTX 1060 and RX 570 rigs are running fine on old socket 775 boards (P35 and P45 chipsets).

thank you both. but does an old PCIe x16 reduce GPU performance. some say it does, i've seen fps tests that show the same. Is this comepletly up to a certain GPU? i am now rethinking for a gtx970 as it goes for more than 100€ less than a gtx 1060gb. you think it's worth it?

The reduced bandwidth of older PCIe x16 revisions does not affect mining. While it may be a concern for other purposes, such as gaming, mining is a different story. (After all, nearly everyone with a dedicated rig connects graphics cards to PCIe x1 slots with risers.)

Hi there, interesting topic. So I run plenty of machines but recently I bought some HP 8100 Elite computers for cheap as 130 USD and since they have 2x16 PCIe and 1x1PCIe I planned to install 3xRX570's on them. So far no luck for me. I got maximum of two running at the moment.
Cheers everyone and good luck with budget mining.

If you are doubtful about the performance of your cards when using the newer cards into your old board better to buy a cheap mother board I think around $50 to $80 you can buy a new motherboard and you can add more GPU if ever you wanted to increase more GPU. Old mothersboard there are possibility that your board can be damaged if you run it for a long time in mining.

Good day to all. I have a question for those who are really engaged in the extraction of crypto currency. What is the minimum set to have at the current bitcoin course, do you need to pay back the investments at least for 6 months? Thanks in advance.

I have tested one Q45 chipset motherboard from HP at my work as I work as an IT with a RX 480 8GB Sapphire Nitro+ of course with another PSU and not the one that came with the PC, it was a 650watt Corsair CX the PSU I tried it for mining and it ran for many weeks without problems.
Since Gtx 1060 takes only 120 watt maximum and if you downclock it can go to 80-90 watt max it can be run even with an old PSU as long as the PSU has a 6 pin pciex cable and is 400 watt or above.

Now it will not be possible to flaunt the budget, have left those free time (((at least 5-7 to you need to enter the mining

You can use the CPUs for mining, there are CPU Only coins out there, BiblePay is one I like, older PCs work well for its hashing algorithm

With just one GPU, you look good to go. However, you'll have to make sure that your power supply does have at least one 8-pin power connector for that one GPU.

Stop screwing around. Do you want to do a mining farm from old junk and earn a lot of money? Mining is an investment for 2-3 years, so you need to collect from new and verified components. The most expensive is a power supply and a video card. Saving 80 dollars on the motherboard is simply unreasonable.

It's not really worth it. Better really just buy new mainboard and put decent processor if you want to really start mining. The thing is; the difficulty is getting higher and higher. So, stop wasting your time playing with it. Either just buy the coins directly with your money OR build a decent rigs IF you have considerably large amount to spare. Forget mining if you just get pennies per day.
