I love the idea and the guy who designed it, but I can't afford to pay $2900 for a kit. I'd rather buy the wood and get it cut at a hardware store, drill holes and buy hardware and make it myself. I just need it to be as light and compact as that one.

I know it's a long shot, but does anybody have the dimensions for all of this?

These things have been used for thousands of years and have always been portable and easily made without power tools. As far as I know ghengis khan wasn't using anything made by dewalt. If you look around (google is your friend) I am sure you could find some yurt plans for free. Hope this helps in some small way

Between 6' and 6'5. Could this be done with PVC some how or would it collapse on itself in a fit of failure?

i wouldnt use pvc it isnt very strong and doesnt handle climate change very well. If it gets cold it is brittle if it spends too much time in the sun it gets brittle.

This link will probably help you http://www.yurtinfo.org/yurtplans.php

http://www.woodlandyurts.co.uk/Yurt_Facts/Build_your_own_yurt.pdf
http://www.simplydifferently.org/DL/yurt_construction_document.pdf ***
http://www.simplydifferently.org/DL/yurtp.pdf

All three of these plan/books/handouts were from http://www.simplydifferently.org/Yurt#How%20To%20Manuals  which seems to have pretty much everything you need to build your yurt.  In the plans above, they give specifications for how tall it will be and the pieces needed to build it; the one with the asterisks will be 5'8" at the walls and 8' tall in the center.  The first linked pdf provides alternatives and instructions on how to build differing height and size yurts.

Hope these allow you to build yours.
