Hi guys,

been reading so much online that in the end it melts your brain lol
I wanted to ask all you 'more advanced' guys out there a couple tips,

I use Tor to browse - have anon email address - anon coinbase not linked (yet)

Should I be looking at downloading VPN's as a guy I asked seemed to think
just going through Tor allows me to remain 'covered' and anon online??

Cheers lads  Huh

You don't need to use a VPN if you are using Tor. Tor keeps you 100% safe and anonymous

I wonder if having a VPN running would have protected the Tor users who recently had their true IPs disclosed in the recent Freedom hosting bust.

Good question

No signature ad here, because their conditions have become annoying.

So are we saying that as long as you go through Tor then you are completely anon?

With regards to the guys who were 'uncovered' - I thought that was just through Tor Mail??

Thanks for responding lads

I'm not saying that.

I think there is a chance a VPN might have protected them, but I would like to hear what more knowledgeable people think.

The people that were uncovered visited websites hosted by Freedom hosting - they downloaded some Javascript code that sent a request outside of Tor to a government server in the US, thus revealing their true IP.

I guess the question is, would this code have also by-passed a VPN if it was running?

I heard that people can still find your real ip address by exploiting a firefox exploit that tricks the browser into revealing its true ip.

Tor by itself will help being anon, but does not cover everything. VPN will make sure your ip is left out the loop, not all vpns  help protect you so chose wisely.

Do you mean you are going to link your bank account to coinbase at some point?

TOR does nothing to protect your identity if your going to do things through it that will reveal your identity.

as i understand the java exploit used, it can take your real ip, cause the exploit is executed at client side (on your pc) so vpn dont helps in that case, cause exploit take ip directly from your pc and send it to the exploit server...

against 0-day exploits are not mutch you can do...
in this case, disabeling the java in firefox browser would help.

It's always seemed to me that having javascript enabled while using Tor is a terrible idea, I always assumed a site could use it to identify you if they wanted to.

I've read discussions elsewhere on the likelihood that Tor via a VPN would have prevented the exploit in this case from working. Some of the technical points of the discussions go over my head, but it seems most agree that the exploit would have returned your VPN's IP address, but would also return the MAC address of your Windows machine.

I think if you're someone that is concerned about more than privacy when browsing and you have a serious desire for anonymity, you would ensure javascript is disabled when using Tor or a VPN to mitigate the risk of exploits like this. And you would also be aware that these services mask your network connection, but can't protect you from malware on your machine that is designed to identify you.

Be careful with Tor if you don't know what you are doing you are playing with fire.
TOR users are very advanced and so are the scammers and hackers, it is a very different place to the normal web.
Yes a vpn that does not keep records ( that part is important) + tor is a very anon way of using the web but always realise that you can still be tracked if someone really wants to.
also if you are using tor, do not under any circumstances have javascript enabled
