Hello Fellow Miners,

I'm about to file a legal complaint via the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). What do you think?

Bear with me, here goes:

I own a crypto currency mining hardware supply webshop and mining myself too. A couple of months ago I started ordering from parallelminer.com. They supply mining hardware for ASIC and non-ASIC. I have ordered both privately and professionaly with them for the last few months. Even though their Hardware is much more expensive than AliExpress and such, I wanted to avoid quality issues, so decided to pay some extra dollars.

I bought different batches of their x6 and x7 breakout boards that you can combine with traditional server powersupplies. So far, so great!

Now comes:

Recently one of my customers bought a X7 card including a server powersupply (sourced elsewhere). After a few days I received a call with a complaint that my customer's entire mining rig fried. Initially I thought he exceeded powerlimits and fried a board or the PSU itself.

I was wrong!

He sent me some pictures. Apparantly the PCI-E 6-pin socket of one (1) of the three (3) rows (12 sockets in total, 3 rows of 4 sockets each) was turned 180 degrees.

Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/iGNhe

Result: switched polarity! Postitive (+) becomes negative (-).. and the other way around!

At least 4 GPU's are completly fried and are completely useless, let alone the rest of the machine that got a beating. So he started to claim me, which is of course his full right (and I would do the same).

I called my insurance company and explained them about the damage my products had caused at my customer's premises. In parallel I also contacted parallelminer and explained them the issue.

I have sent various emails via their support form and also called them a couple of times. Most of the calls were unanswered, only one got through. The person on the phone saw my email and fully understood my claim. He promised a call in return by one of the managers. After weeks of waiting and sending more emails with complaint they finally replied.

"they would ship me 15 extra pieces, out of the blue". Something I didn't ask for....

Please read following email conversation (bottom to top) (by the way not all I sent):

Me

Ok, thanks, will post this to the mining community.  Will settle this the legal way. You'll hear from my laywer.

Dear xxx
This is xxx  General Manager. At this time their is noting else we can offer to you SIR.  When checking out on our website you specifically accepted all our terms and conditions. Herein below

We are not responsible for any incidental or consequential damages arising from breach of warranty or any other legal theory even if Centrix International or one of its associates has been notified of such possibility. By proceeding, you agree to the following terms and conditions

I have advise our staff not to respond to any future email from you. Shall you need our address for litigation, it is clearly posted on our website

Sincerely
xxx

Me

Guys,

This is not a warranty case! You manufactured a product that has the connectors turned 180 degree the other way, causing + to be – and the other way around. See the pictures I provided.

So, your product didn’t became defective outside of the warranty period, they caused damage because your manufacturer made a mistake. This is something completely different.

If you tell me this is a warranty case and my products are out of warranty, then I’ll issue a file at the FTC and see how they think about this.

And by the way: your response time is ridiculous. I wrote several times via your support form, called several times (thereof got only got on time connected with someone that understood the issue and promised a return call, that didn’t happen).

Please be professional.

Br, xxx  xxx

Them

xxx ,

the first e-mail from you to us that I can find is from December 6th regarding the X7.

Your only order for X7 breakout boards is #6281 and was place on June 29th and delivered on July 19th. We have a 30 day warranty from the date ordered, 45 day warranty for international orders to account for the adding shipping time. I generally just count the 30 days from the day delivered. No matter how you look at it, the items were out of warranty when you contacted us on December 6th.

Kind regards,
xxx

Me

Hi xxx ,

Thanks for the replacements. This however doesn't solve my problem.

The issue is that your wrongly manufactured product caused damage. Wrong polarity on the board  fried a few GPU's and some other system components. Im still happy that the melted wires didn't start a fire at my cutomer's place.

My customer now issued a claim for his damage to my company. I assume you are insured too? How do we solve this?

xxx ,

the only order with us that is still under warranty would be order #12505. I am shipping out 15 replacement breakout boards to you at no cost. The tracking number is 789226653889. I hope you have a great new year!

Kind regards,
xxx

xxx ,

this is a courtesy e-mail so you know that your e-mails are being read and forwarded to the correct individuals.

Kind regards,
xxx

Me

Kindly reminder: please read previous inquiries! Serious quality issue, breakoutboard polarity wrongly manufactured. Result: Damaged system, fried GPUs (see previous emails). You promised that a manager would contact me. 4 weeks down, zero response.

I ordered +1000$ boards form you as i really wanted to avoid bad quality from aliexpress. Now i'm having a serious issue and all doors appear to be shut. I urge you to contact me and provide me the steps in order to start a claim. If you decide to further delay response, ill start a legal case

Br, xxx  xxx

Armchair nobody here: Not surprised they appeared to have ignored emails (loads of places do this hoping the person just gives up, half the time it works). They're also slammed with orders right now I would imagine (and have been for months).

It's kind of uncharted territory using "home made" parts, with little or no instructions. However it's pretty obvious when they make a truck ton of these and then one happens to be backwards, that it's incorrect.

My main concern is, how many are incorrect.... this could be quite a big issue for others.

Good luck on whatever happens, and that is my uneducated, useless opinion on your unfortunate scenario.

I'm also concerned others might have received wrong boards too. If one entire batch is manufactured wrong, more people might be at risk. These connectors happen to be on a belt running through a machine if done automatically.. just saying..

That is pretty messed up, but I guess its a chance you take when you outsource without properly testing everything.  Last July I ordered a few things from them and had to just deny the shipment and request a refund because they never responded to a request to change an item they had listed wrong on their site.  How can you expect quality service or products from someone that can't even respond to an email within a week?

Wow I have had nothing but great service from parallelminer. I hope it gets straightened out for you. Also thanks for the heads up. I will check any future break out boards I get for backwards plugs.

It's odd that they are soldered different than the other connectors, but that doesn't mean that polarity is reversed. PCIe also supports reverse polarity and lane reversal. It would be dependent on circuit board design and you'd need to look at the back side. If polarity were truly inversed and circuit not designed to handle it, then it would fry immediately. Not clear if that's what happened. If he had them working for some time and then they fried, it most likely wasn't due to the breakout boards. I just got a couple x7's and will check them when I'm home, but pretty sure all the connectors are in same orientation.

You're probably thinking about data paths. This is power. Reversing polarity on 12V lines could easily result in parts bursting into flames, especially with a >100A safety trip point.

If cables from both forward and reversed jacks were plugged into the same bus, it'd probably trip out the PSU as a dead short. But if, say, some GPUs were plugged into only reversed jacks, they could suffer pretty severe damage before the PSU even noticed the load. The kind of damage that would start happening the instant power was applied.

okay  they sold me miss wired  cables I posted a thread here.

I was lucky and gear did not fry.

My grip with them is they gave me a referral code.

And I have had forum members tell me they used the code

over 5000 worth of gear

and  not 1 penny has been sent to me from  parallelminer.com

If it were 1 member  telling me they used the code  fine.

but it was 21 or 22 people

so frankly I consider  them to be yet another sleazy company.  in the world of asic gear.

listen to sidehack his gear is well made and I never had issues with his stuff

Phil I know you sent me a code for them at one time. I got 5 percent off my order.  I can’t believe they didn’t other their agreement. I am waiting on an order to get here from them right now. I hope it’s right.

Both of my boards have all the connectors soldered in the same orientation and middle isn't flipped. I'd check the voltage on power and ground of each connector that's flipped to see if they are actually soldered in reverse polarity. Orientation alone won't tell you that and there are no markings on the board to tell what the pins are going to.
