Does anybody here currently or know how to set up awesome miner to switch coins based on difficulty? I'm interested in setting something like this up.

This is not supported out of the box.  The profit switching managed miner is for... well... switching coins based on profit.

It does have c# script ability, so you could create a rule with your specific trigger, and action.
