If you want to do your own research and pick a project that you like, thats one one way of choosing a coin.

Another way is to look for coins that are at historical low (might be hard as everything has been pumping) and invest. I found sia and pascal at their lows late november and now theyve both gone up alot.

Why  you don't want just try to buy both coins) With XRP IMHO it could make 10 dollars or will fall again to few cents - very risky and u must understand this.

Stick with ZEC imo because it seems undervalued right now and given the talk around privacy coins one would only think it is due for a heater. Other than that I would say try looking outside the top 100 because that is where you will find the gems and the 10-100x spots.
