One good strategy is to mine brand new coins, like Sigil. It just came out today but isn't listed on an exchange yet. As a result, few miners are mining it: Sigilmining.com and https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2710157.msg27717799#msg27717799

Yeah only issue with this is they may not ever get listed on exchanges, in which case you are SOL, or when they get listed everyone just dumps their coins ASAP, also kind of screwing you.
