I suggest that the global cryptocurrency community establishes a special annual holiday.

Purpose:

1. Feel appreciation for what cryptocurrencies mean in our lives, and what life would be without bitcoin. Reflect on the past year: What the bitcoin ecosystem was exactly a year ago, what it is now: What major developments occurred in the past year. What main events are anticipated next year. A prominent individual could deliver some "State of Bitcoin" address on that day.

2. Devote some time that day and take initiative to help a new person (friend, colleague, relative) to start using bitcoin - sit down with her and help her to install the needed software on her devices, help her to open needed accounts, e.g. e-wallet. Teach her wallet security. Most importantly, hand-hold as she executes her first bitcoin transactions, both send and receive. Give her some coins! Teach her how to convert bitcoins into fiat.

3. Strengthen and unite the cryptocurrency community. Remind each bitcoiner on that day that he is a part of this great community, no matter how bitcoin-unfriendly his current environment may be.

Name of the Holiday:

"The Global Currency Day" is my favorite. It's not perfect, though. It's ambiguous (at least in English): It could mean either properly "The Day of the Global Currency" or, wrongly, "The Global Day of Currencies".
It should not be a niche name like "The Bitcoin Day" or "The Cryptocurrency Day", which would not be meaningful to the general population. The name should convey that the occasion for the celebration is the transition of the humankind from using local national currencies to the global ones, be it bitcoin or other.

Date:

3rd of January seems good because:
The Genesis Block was created on 3rd January 2009, so it could be considered Bitcoin's birthday!  Smiley
The beginning of the calendar year is when many people make New Year resolutions and open their minds to new and better things in their lives. So this may be a good season for newcomers to start using bitcoin.

Our coordinated effort to attract new bitcoin users on this day could increase bitcoin's value, and as such, would benefit current bitcoin holders. Perhaps, in return, they would be willing to finance any special events on this day. The community may have tons of great suggestions on this topic! Please express them here now!
Let's celebrate Bitcoin's 5th Anniversary on Saturday, 3rd January 2014!  Wink

12th January is another option - the first bitcoin transaction took place 2009-01-12.
But I still like 3-Jan better!

Why not have a week long (technically 9 day, but whatever) holiday from the 3rd to the 12th?
It will give people a better chance to conduct meet-ups/markets in public (and online) as well to trade BTC/LTC/altcoins.

Yep. The 3rd of January looks fine for me. We can get drunk on the 31st of December and will have three days to carry on with that...  Grin

Personally I think the anniversary of the Genesis Block would be the best.
