I know that they are considered legit company but after long waiting i receive my ledger nano s and it doesn't work
tried all the troubleshooting guides on their sites (delete other apps, reinstall chrome etc)
nothing worked out.
im pretty frustrated from this and from contact support.
i read that its most probably problm with cable,  so why they are providing cheap cables from the beggining ?

I know these sound obvious, but just have to check if.....

1.  Your'e using the cable that came with the device? Not all USB cables work with it or try another cable laying around?
2.  Are you actually clicking on the BTC wallet on the device before opening the app?
3.  Tried different USB port?
4.   Does your OS see the device when plugged in?

That's all I have, good luck!  Mine has been working flawless for a long time now.

So you cant figure it out when tens of thousands of people can and all of a sudden its the companies problem?

What a useless post.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

Got mine directly from them and your problem is very easy. You can just try it out with other cables where you can see it through android phones as their chargers.

This isn't a big problem to deal with. How come that you have tried "all" troubleshooting guides, just change the cable - look for another one and it will be fine and your device will be powered up.

You shouldn't be upset with these such basic problems that others are dealing up with it early and solving it easily just because of the cable.

Got mine from their official reseller for Asia and never really had problems like yours. Once I plugged it in, the software automatically detects it. Even Electrum was able to detect it. It worked using Bitcoin, Bitcoin segwit enabled, bitcoin cash, ETH and all others. Never had a problem with any cryptocurrencies, even the other apps works.

Probably you haven't sent up the Ledger Nano S yet? I believe you have to set up the device first then after that, that is the only time the software will be able to detect it. Also make sure that on the device you are on the Bitcoin app if you are using it for Bitcoins.

Double check and see if you have "browser support" turned off in the wallet settings. It needs to be off for you to use the official chrome apps.

Well, I find this topic very helpful and enlighting because I am starting to doubt it's efficiency. I haven't bought one yet because I have done my research and some are complaining but also I have read good comments such as its the best hard wallet and easy to use. Maybe it's better to see it for myself. I try to contact the main supplier too. I am a bit scared about getting fake ones.

the fact that it doesnt work with all micro usb cables is a bit of a pain in the ass. in fact, why not just make it like a thumb drive?

I would definitely buy from the main website.

Where are you getting this? It should work with all micro usb cables. Are you accidentally using a "power" usb cable, one that has the data pins disconnected? You can get those sometimes with cables that come with chargers. The Nano S comes with it's own cable anyways.

I believe the reason it doesn't have a male USB connector on the device itself is that it would make it very difficult to press the buttons and read the screen on many computers/devices when it was plugged in.

You should check it first before buying it and follow the tutorial using ledger nano S

Connect your Ledger Nano S

Plug your Nano S with the USB cable on a computer, and follow the instructions on the embedded small screen. You can choose to create a new wallet, or import a Bitcoin account or an Ethereal account. Whatever your selection, you just need to observe the on-screen instructions all along the process, selecting and validating with the two buttons above the display.
2.
Choose a PIN code

Choose and memorize your four-digit PIN code that will be requested each time you connect your Nano S. Confirm this PIN code and be careful to remember it: 3 wrong successive PIN codes will reset your Nano S.
3.
Backup your recovery phrase

Copy on the "Recovery sheet" supplied in the box 24 words in order of appearance. This step is really important to guarantee you can recover anytime your wallet in case of loss or theft. You will not be able to finish the configuration by confirming you copied the 24 words by selecting some of them as requested. Keep your "Recovery sheet" in a safe place.
4.
Install Ledger Apps

Once you've seen the mention: "Your device is now ready", your Nano S is configured. Now you just have to install the Ledger Apps on your computer to use your wallet. In your Chrome or Chromium 50+ browser, download for free the Ledger Wallet Bitcoin Chrome app or the Ledger Wallet Ethereum Chrome app. You'll find these management interfaces on the Apps page. This apps get installed in seconds, and the upgrades are free.
5.
Your Nano S is ready to be used

Now you can use your Nano S with your Chrome apps on any computer, even a compromised one, to send or receive payments. Each transaction will be verified on the embedded display, and validated with buttons.

this is a link https://www.ledgerwallet.com/start/ledger-nano-s

If you still can not use it there may be damage from the factory or during distribution

The hardware was designed for a long shelf life, and it complies with the BIP 39/44 standards so you can always restore your crypto by using the seed words in any compatible BIP 39 wallet.
So in essence, forever

It's designed to last long as Xynerise said it's likely to be forever but I won't consider saying forever as there's no permanent in this world.

It depends to the user on how he's good on handling that tiny hardware wallet and on how he's keeping it.

Just keep it safe and don't destroy it, just like the normal material that we are keeping to ourselves like gadgets. If the owner handling it wrong, its life will end up easily.

Since the storage of the nano s is a simple flash memory the expected lifespan would be about 10.000 to 100.000 (Write-)cycles.
Depending on the usage its definitely enough for 5 to 10 years.

The better the conditions are, the longer it will survive (e.g. no extreme temperature change / high moisture).

What a useless post.

When tons of same product is sold out in one place, there would be certainly problems / damages with few products. Better get such unique featured products directly from the shops in hand. Though its time consuming, it at times satisfy us with the products we buy as we expected. Instruction are do given along with the kid to avoid uncertainty. Keep the tiny wallet safe.

This could be just an error with the cable or perhaps a compatibility problem. I could not say its the companies poor workmanship or quality of product because for one to be successful there must be a quality control to check the overall performance and functionally otherwise an unsatisfied customer would just ruin everything.

It should work for quite some years. The first old ledger wallet hw.1 promoted itself with 500.000 write cycles, insert and eject the usb 500.000 times.

The Ledger Nano S is one of the newest wallet from Ledger and should last longer, I have had the pleasure of comparing both and I must say the Ledger Nano S is a lot better made than the old ledger wallet so the life of it should be a minimum of more than 500.000 write cycles.
