Perhaps the discord has become popular because it does not need phone numbers for registration. Although, it is also very convenient for speakers. Maybe i am right  Smiley

Because Discord is popular among the gaming community. Has features that is designed for gamers etc. The aesthetics is so gamer. And the Gaming Community itself is huge.

Why Discord became so popular? Why Telegram is not enough for chatting, channels etc? Why not Slack?
It is easy to use for me people
The chat through is very beautiful.
Easy access between friends.

I prefer discord if you compare it with the telegram. In discord, you can have many different chat rooms, it's graphics much easier to see what other people write than in telegram, where you just have one endless group chat, where important messages will be missed, as the group chat moves on.
I'm active in many different discord groups, but only in a handful of telegrams groups.
