Will the Ledger Nano S support future blockchains?

Hi, fairly new here and in the crypto-sphere.

I know that currently Ledger supports BTC, ETH, NEO and some of the hard forked btc/eth coins, but are there plans for them to eventually support all chains/is there the capability for current Ledgers to do it without being replaced in the future? I think I read somewhere they they were working on supporting Rai?

I guess what I'm trying to get at, is will I ever have to buy a new wallet in the future or will the Ledger be able to stay ahead of the curve and support new blockchains?

Nobody knows. I would say that they are always looking forward to support more promising coins and that they will keep supporting the Ledger Nano S for some time after the release of a new device. Trezor for example, just released a new model (Trezor T) that will make supporting new coins easier. But they also announced that they won't stop supporting their old model (at least for some time).

(no mentions to Raiblocks at the moment, but NEO also wasn't listed and was added to the wallet after the support was developed by an independent dev. The same can happen with XRB)

I'm pretty sure they're going to continue to add support to other promising cryptocurrencies, whether or not it'd be on the Ledger Nano S or the Ledger Blue, but it's very unlikely for them to support ALL cryptocurrencies; as it's unlikely for them to waste manpower on coins that doesn't have much demand.

Great, that sort of enthusiasm to work with the community and get new coins listed shows promise. As far as I know, they're the only wallet system doing it and I hope it continues like this.

I get that they can't really support EVERYTHING, but it's nice that they're making the effort for the bigger coins that count.

If that's important to you then Trezor is probably a better bet as outside developers can work on it. All Trezor need to do is verify it and sign it off. Ledger do things internally which is a natural bottleneck.

I like the sound of how fast their out-sourcing is, but could it end up with more room for errors?

XEM is the most recent one which was entirely developed by one non Trezor guy. I don't know about others.

There's no way Trezor would add something to their firmware that wasn't 100% ready to roll. It took a few months from the start to the finish to implement.

As of right now Ledger have more coins on their platform but I presume that's because most of them are cut and paste jobs or clones like Dash and Pivx and don't require much extra work.

Maybe I'm talking out of my arse and Ledger can be developed for by outsiders too. But for XEM at least Ledger was never a go. If I remember rightly Ledger did ponder it but wanted to hear from the XEM developers and never did. The guy who did it for Trezor isn't part of the NEM/XEM team.
