Since Nvidia 1080 ti GPUs are now manufactured with unobtainium.... how about...

I wanted to set up an 8 GPU rig using 1080 ti cards. I can't find them anywhere except a few for $1300+ or used ones on Ebay for $900-1000.

I can buy a brand new computer with dual 1080 ti's for $2600 bucks that ships in 3 days. So now you can see what I'm thinking...

Buy four of these computers. Essentially paying a little bit over market price for the card and get a free computer.  But here is my dilemma...

Would I be better off setting up all four computers to mine or should I pull the video cards from them and build them into a single mining rig?

Side note: I have unlimited free electricity and cooling systems in place.


ETA I also found PNY 1080 ti cards for about $850 ea. What do you guys think of those?

go for pny 1080ti
they are good too and having one rig of 6gpu will be easier to manage compare to three computers with 2 1080ti each

If you have free electricity then there is no point in splitting them up.  All you would be doing is making it harder to resell these.  Keep them all as-is and if you want to expand you can always add cards to them!

$1300 per 1080ti still seems absurd to me. If you're really set on the 1080ti, I would consider the $850 PNY cards.

Perhaps, however, you could sell the remnants of the gaming rigs (good luck). This would be more of a pain if they don't have integrated graphics...
