Hi all. Thanks to this forum I have learned a lot of mining.

But I have a case. I have an b250 mining board, 8x 570 gpu and one evga g2 1600w. How to power these risers safely?

I have read that I should avoid power coming from sata because of the fire hazard. So I can´t use sata, cpu or periph. ports from the psu.

That leaves me with the last option, power via pci 8-pin. But since I have 8gpu I only have one 8pin port in spare.

Can I power 1 gpu and 1 riser with the same 8-pin cable from the psu? I insert the 8-pin into the gpu and the 6-pin into the riser.

Comments? Thoughts?

You should be able to power both the onboard 8-pin connection and the riser from the same line off of the PSU, but you may need an extension cable for the riser.

2x molex to 6-pin PCIe adapters are fine (avoid placing several on the same line). 1x SATA to 1x PCIe adapters are more iffy, especially since the ones bundled with risers are often of rather poor quality. Most of the time you'll still be okay using one of those adapters per line, but do note that SATA isn't rated for the same current (and thus power) as 4-pin molex or 6-pin PCIe connectors are.

molex to pcie or sata to pcie is very risky. the safest way is using pcie power splitter cables. it splits 1pcie output to 2. you can easily find it on aliexpress or amazon.

Molex is pretty safe in general. The molex connectors are rated for quite high currents (enough to work just fine within the 75W maximum per card), and if your 570s are undervolted you could probably use 1 cable per 2 cards (if that's 18awg cables, which they probably are with your evga psu) without any problems as well. There are also adapters for CPU EPS cables, considering how you've got only one utilized, you could buy an adapter to power a couple more cards with the 2nd one (with something like "EPS => 2x PCI-e 8pin").

Thanks!

I will avoid adapters. Seems all I need is an 6pin extender to reach the riser then. Good to know I can use the evga 1600w for the rig (mb, cards, risers etc.)

Info for other people.

8-pin is capable of handling 288W.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/power-supply-specifications-atx-reference,review-32338-12.html

Even though the specification allows for a delivery capability of 75 W (six-pin connector) or 150 W (eight-pin connector), the total power-handling capacity of these connectors is at least 192 and 288 W, respectively, using standard terminals, and even more using the HCS or Plus HCS terminals.
