after reading and hearing the buzz around crypto currencies and their massive price increases i have decided to look into it further but I joined this forum thinking it would be a good place to start but I see no beginner info. Can someone please point me in the right direction to an easy to understand document outlining exactly what these currencies are and how to trade in them as a beginner?

Try look in the Local and find it where country you belong.. Like for example in the Philippines theres a thread for the beginners or newbie, they will guide them and give information about Bitcoin.

You shouldn't go immediately to altcoins and trading if you're new. First learn about bitcoin and or blockchain technology in general first. Coindesk[1] has a good guide compilation for beginners. Or if you're a listener type of person, watch Crypt0's Introduction to Cryptocurrency[2] on YouTube. Links below.

By airdrops, do you mean ICOs that give away their coins for free? Don't get involved in these schemes. Most of them will end up worthless, seriously, they are a greater waste of time than using a bitcoin faucet!

Even if the ICO that you get involved with has a reasonable sounding business model, you can't sell the coins until an exchange makes a market in the coin, which is very tough to do when there are hundreds of coins to choose from. You risk having a lot of the coins you seek and no where to send them!

I would advice you to check out https://en.bitcoinwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page, it's the best source with basic info, I think, to learn crypto fast in a right way.

It's important to know as much as you can before you start trading, so read up on the basics first: If you're just starting out, check out some links on the basics of BTC: http://bit.ly/Bitcoin101Guide
..but once you're ready, start with some simple exchanges such as Coinbase. Once you get the hang of recognizing market trends, head over to a more in depth platform such as GDAX and you can implement different methods for profiting. This link might help you too, it includes examples of the different types of cryptocurrencies and what they are designed to do:

Good luck!

Welcome you in joining big crypto family, instead of investing maybe you will want to try out bounties airdrops first instead of going into trading, then at the same time slowly study about crypto related info, and you decide whether you want to go into altcoins, etherum or bitcoins.
