The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

For a fast transaction, the fee should have been about 10 times higher. You can try a CPFP (Child Pays For Parent) transaction: send your 0.5 BTC to one of your own addresses, and pay a fee high enough to pay for both transactions.
I think 0.003 BTC fee will be enough to put both around 400 sat/byte total.

It will depend on your wallet whether or not you can select that unconfirmed input.

I've managed to add your transaction to ViaBTC's acceleration queue. It should confirm within a few hours. Just wait, don't do anything else.

Update: it's confirmed by ViaBTC, as expected.
