My belief is that pool switching among a small basket of altcoins using high “Est Rewards” (from a site like WhatToMine) will lead to more coins in my wallet… right?

If you are looking for "more coins", then you need to mine low difficulty coins.  Coins that hit high "Est Rewards" on Whattomine get jumped on very quickly by people looking to keep mining the latest hot coin, and the thousands of auto-switching tools out there.
