I was distressed that Bitcoin recently dropped the Generate options from its client, though I understand the reasoning.

What I'd like is to find a GPU based bitcoin miner that does not need to connect with a pool and works much as the original client did, but uses the GPU instead.

Is there such a client? (and if no, then why not exactly?)

Thanks,

Hoyt

I'm pretty sure GUIminer (http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=3878.0) allows solo-mining.

The bitcoin client still supports solo-mining.
It just dropped its "program" based miner they made.

They now require you to use an external miner which then
connects to the bitcoin client.

Thanks for the responses. I will look into GUIminer. Hopefully the bitcoin client will support GPU mining in future official versions.

It does, it just doesn't contain the code to do the actual mining. You can use any mining program you like. I know of no mining program that doesn't support solo mining with the bitcoin client. The bitcoin client just doesn't contain the actual code to do the mining.
