Hi,

I want to buy a new card and have no idea what to get, can any one out there tell me if this card will be fine to use for mining when I am away from my pc?

http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=130&prod_no=2048

For once in you life refrain from responding with an answer that has nothing to do with the question asked - damn I know it is going to be very difficult for a few of you!

Anyway, I appreciate your reply in response to this question.

Thank you,

Hamburger

Will it be fine for mining when you're away from your pc? Of course it will... but there are better cards out there.

In general for the same price a HD5850 will be much better.
I have 4x 6950 and 3x 5850. Every 5850 runs much cooler (10° Celsius) and overclocks very well.
At least in my case the 5850 is as good as the 6950 for bitcoin mining.

So a 5850 will be 50% better for BC mining then the 6850.

If your only concern is about having it run while being away from the computer the only worry should be making sure there's adequate cooling.

As long as you keep an eye on temps on the card and adjust its fan speed accordingly there shouldn't be any problems.

If you're more interested in its hash output then as others have said, there are better cards out there.

If your main application will be mining, stay away from the 6850. I have one, beside some others, and I can tell you it is slower than a 5830 but produces twice the heat

And if the 6850 produces a lot of heat, you will probably be less comfortable running it at home while you are away. The 58xx cards are the best, but really hard to find. In terms of what is more available, I would either pay more and get a 6870 or even a 6950, or pay less and get a 5770. Also, whatever you get, make sure you have a power supply that can run it safely. You don't want to mine with a crappy overtaxed power supply, regardless of whether you are at home or not. Good luck!
