Author Topic: Two PCI-Extension Powering Questions  (Read 142 times)

I have my rig up and running and I am looking to expand. I have read varying degrees of information but looking for the safest way to do the following

I have 2x 1000 EVGA GQ PSU Asus B250 mining board
4x MSI Gaming X 1070
2x EVGA 1070tis
2x ASUS Cerebrus 1070ti

I have everything power up except the last 2x ASUS 1070ti

I am looking at doing this two ways;

Can I power 2x 1070ti off one cable that has 2x 6+2s? This would be roughly 118watts each at 65% TDP (236 watts ) which I dont think it safe as I believe the max watts is 225 for that cable, correct?


Or

I can power one 1070ti and then get an extender for the other 6+2 pin on that line and run it to a riser (75 watts) for a total of 193 watts. Seems safer but messy with extra cables and extenders. If I do this do I need a 6+2 to 6 pin extender or can I just use 6pin to 6pin extender on not plug the +2 part in?
I just want to be sure I go the safest route. With all the wasted 6+2 I have hanging off not connected to anything I want to maximize my connections without using Molex or the other unsafe bot word.

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I think option 2 is most likely the best route by extending the 2nd 6+2 to another riser so you are under the recommended Watts. There may be different opinions here. Maybe also consider Molex to 6 pin to power a riser or two.

You should be able to Power 2 Cards with The dual 6+2 pcie wire hence they are rated for 300watts.
If im wrong please correct me.
The wire gauge seems to be 18.

So yea get some 6 pin Risers aswell cense you got plenty of pcie cables connectors.

The last statement from the above post would be my recommendation as well.

While you can in theory run the cards off the 6+2 cable if you spread the current over more wires using your unused molex lines that would be the best option.

Most consumer PSU cables even with the 300 watt maximum rating are meant for maybe a few minutes peak current at 300 watts, not 24/7/365 at those levels.

A more realistic continuous load would be around 200 watts, so as you said yourself it would be pushing it. If you had 16 gauge cables maybe, but with 18 gauge I would spread the current around across a few more cables if you can.

Another $10 invested in a couple of Molex to 6-pin adapter cables will give you peace of mind that you won't burn your house down as well as probably providing your rig increased long-term stability.

Considering The 1070s will pulls some Power from the risers aswell you can hookup one 8 pin per gpu without  a problem If you limit the powerdraw  as you described.

With those settings they will probably pull 90-100 watts or less per pcie cable so NO sweat man
