hey im looking for a good solid place to buy bitcoins from. im in the usa so im not quite sure if I can or not, can anybody point me in the right direction?

I recommend coinbase. I wrote up a bit about my experience with coinbase and how it works, the link is in my signature, at the bottom. Take a look, its a great service and not expensive at all either.

I've used coinbase to sell a few times, seems like people recommend it to buy also.

I personally have used coinbase to buy bitcoins and you pay with your bank account. Fees are minimal (especially compared to credit card/paypal sites) and it takes about 4 days for your first transaction. After 30 days from the first transaction you can buy instantly.
