high fees or more accurately increasing fees like this is a feature and it is actually a defending mechanism against spam attack and it is a good feature to have in order to prevent (at least some spams from happening) but it is also annoying because with increase of adoption fees will also go up because at some point (which we are currently past) there will be more transactions than there is block space.

This is a common occurrence which I have noticed from the last couple of years and there are many reasons for this like the Chinese New Year(People withdraw their bitcoin to celebrate the festivities), Bans by different countries(South Korea ban this year) and some other FUDERS and hackers trying to take advantage of weak hands during these vulnerable times.
