I've decided to give solo mining a small alt coin a try but can't seem to get my L3+ working it always comes back as a dead connection. Does anyone know how I can go about solo mining, or if its even possible with an L3+.

Thanks

The dead connection is the only hurdle. Obviously, you can solo mine any coin.
Make sure you have configured the wallet conf file properly and opened the rpc port necessary for connection.
If you still face any issues, I'll recommend a google search on how to solo mine a coin and the configurations necessary in the local network.
