As per the title, are online wallets where you keep the private key as safe as installing a wallet on your desktop? Blockchain.info is an example?

With the recovery key, could you import the address into another wallet?

It may be considered less safe because the key has been sent thru the internet vs. generated locally on your desktop. But still, it is likely safe. You can use the key to import the address in to any wallet.

If your storing a significant quantity of coins/tokens, you should get a hardware wallet like a Trezor or Ledger. For $100/$200, you will easily make that much if the cryptos keep appreciating in value.

There are so many hacks these days that nothing on-line is safe IMO.

my wallets never touch the internet where they are stored.  They go through a pc to pc proces with a three factor authentication.  I have been burned once before.  Not again

if by online wallet you mean web wallets, yes there are safe places but there is a degree of safety here. it is like the difference between carrying cash in your pocket, at a bank, or at home in your desk drawer or in a 10 inch thick safe buried under ground!

a web wallet like blockchain.info encrypts and decrypts your wallet inside your browser and only saves the encrypted file on their servers. if their servers get hacked the hacker only gets the encrypted files and can not do anything about it because they are encrypted by AES method which is pretty strong. but if there is a bug in their system in encryption, or something in your browser or on your computer like a key logger you simply lose all the money you have.
