Actually, that isn't true. By design, the extract script that btcrecover uses for Electrum only takes a very very small extract that cannot be used to access your wallet unless the person has the entire wallet file. The whole idea is that you can freely give the extract without worrying about loss of funds. The only info that someone would have is your password (assuming they were able to recover it).

Without access to the rest of your wallet file, it is impossible the decrypted header information could ever lead to a loss of funds.

I just need to know how to use btc recover to recover just one letter of my password.

You can't... It either finds the whole password or nothing at all. The password itself is not stored in the file, it's just used as a key for the encryption algorithm used to encrypt the wallet file and wallet file contents. So, you need the whole password to be able to test if it works.


Your options are basically:
1. Trust a wallet recovery service (give them extract or wallet file), pay fee
2. Brute force the password using btcrecover (or maybe hashcat)
3. Remember your password
4. Find the correct seed for your wallet in your records

If you remember anything at all about the password, you can significantly reduce the number of passwords that btcrecover will generate by creating an appropriate tokens file

None that I have used personally... Dave @ https://walletrecoveryservices.com/ seems to have a good reputation and has been around a while, although the message on their website seems to indicate they're in high demand at the moment.. minimum seems to be 0.3 BTC for them to look at it in a reasonable time.

Well this changes things... seems we all misunderstood what you meant earlier when you asked if it was possible to find just 1 letter!

If you think it's just a small typo and one letter wrong... then you probably just want to use a passwordlist and the "typos" section to test for common errors.

Most likely you'd want to use something simple like: "--typos 2 --typos-replace %P"

with a passwordlist.txt that looks like:

I just tested this on a fully encrypted v3.0.5 wallet... using a 20 char password that is using numbers, lowercase, uppercase and symbols (Y0ur20CharPa55w0rd!!). Using "--typos 2 --typos-replace %P"... it generated 1,789,651 password combinations to test for and gave me an ETA of less than 15 minutes. As, you can see, I purposely put 2 typos in (0's instead of o's)... and it found the correct password.


Obviously, I can't guarantee it will definitely work, but this is definitely worth a try.

I had the same problem on Multibit.

Wait... I'm confused, so the seed you have is generating the same addresses as were in your old wallet? If that is the case, then your seed seems to be working fine. If it is generating addresses that where in your wallet, and you can check that address on a block explorer and it has a balance, then the only reason I can think of that your wallet is not showing transaction history/balance correctly is because it is not synced correctly.

If you restore the seed, is the dot in the bottom right corner Red, Green or 2 blue arrows?

What exactly are you trying to recover here.
The seed should store your entire wallet shouldn't it? What else are you missing?

If the seed recovers the right addresses, then that  means that any history should alos be accurate and the derivation path is accurate. If there is nothing in the wallet then you have nothing left in that wallet.
Unless you have another wallet file, is there anything else in that folder that follows a name electrum would make (other than one you recently made for your wallet, like wallet_1 or wallet_2 etc...).

I would recommend Dave's wallet recovery service, I have had a number of friends who have lost their password, and Dave has managed to crack most of them. Definitely an indispensable service. Currently the rate is 20% of the wallet contents, payable on completion of the task.

If you are using a seed to restore your wallet and it contains no information then I dont understand what the problem is. It's not hiding the address/balances behind a password, the wallet is just empty.

I've been PMing the OP... as far as I can tell... he is claiming that the seed will recreate his wallet with the correct addresses, but the wallet balance is 0 and has no history.

However, the seed recovery script from btcrecover cannot match addresses with his seed, so I suspect that the seed the OP has written down, is a "valid" seed, but is NOT the "correct" seed. That is to say, the seed is creating a wallet, it's just not the wallet that the OP was actually using. I've seen this before on these boards, users with the wrong seed...

I've tried to figure out how this actually happens. I suspect it is something to do with Electrum supporting multiple wallet files, and users accidentally opening a different wallet file (for which they don't have the seed written down) which is then automatically opened whenever they re-start Electrum.

User then tries to use their seed and get a different wallet...


Moral of the story? ALWAYS test your seeds... and ALWAYS write down ANY seed that you are given from ANY wallet. You never know when you're going to screw something up and send coins to the wrong place!

- Install python 2.7 and select "Add python.exe to Path" during installation.
- Download ZIP of this repository. https://github.com/Dwerg/walletaid
- Unzip walletaid.
- Make a copy of wallet.dat and place in walletaid folder.
- Open config.ini and change parameters appropriate to the coin.
- Run "Extract keys.bat"
- Choose whether to dump all keys or search for specific key(s).
- If search is chosen, paste each indivudual address to seach for on a new line and click "OK".
- Open "foundkeys.txt" to see the recovered keys and addresses.

I don’t know the parameters for your specific wallet, but may you find them in the description.

Electrum Portable used the .dat a bit longer until 1.9.4 or so. ( i am not 100% sure)

depending on which Electrum version you used - you can use "extract-electrum-halfseed.py" (Up to version 1.9.x) or "extract-electrum2-partmpk" (for version 2.0+) from the BTCRecover-Tools.
These tools only extract a part of your seed or MPK, you can give it to other people and they can try to crack it BUT it is not possible to steal your coins with this.

How many BTC are in the wallet? If it is a larger amount and we agree on a reward, I try it on my EC².

While this user is correct that the output from the scripts cannot be used to steal your coins, providing the file itself can enable users to attempt to figure out your password and recover the BTC themselves.
Long story short - you can provide the output from the scripts but not the file (wallet.dat) and anyone asking for it is surely trying to steal your coins.

yep, because "extract-electrum-halfseed.py" and "extract-electrum2-partmpk.py" do not work with encrypted wallets.

And i'm sure that the wallet is from Electrum. I can't understand why my password who i wrote and the seed doesn't work.
There was a bug on my HDD when i changed Electrum version.

you ever used the password after you have changed it? If yes, and it worked - your Wallet-File is probably Corrupt (somehow) - if not, then you probably made an mistake while creating the new password.

my recommendation:
Start with the "Typos", so you can exclude that you have errors with upper/lower letters, swapt letters, missing letters or double letters. (these are usually the most common mistakes)

EDIT: I just see that HCP has already recommended this to you.
