I need to buy a better phone but have google authenticator on the old one. I use GA to access coinbase and bittrex.
Should I transfer GA before I get rid of the old phone? If so, how do I do this transfer?
BTW I really hate having to use GA because of such doubts, is there an alternative way to access bittrex and coinbase?

I think coinbase gave you some backup code which have to be used for this such cases.I think that is the only way to change the google authenticator option or you just have to create new account or wallet and use everything new informations and you can transfer your bitcoins or other holdings without any transaction fee through email transactions.Because coinbase doesn't charge any trnasaction fee for transaferring bitcoins internally to another coinbase accounts.

The only way to backup your 2fa code/s is to save their corresponding recovery/secret code or Qr code which can be seen when you first activated your 2fa.
These backup's can be used to import your 2fa code/s into another device or another auth app (Each 2fa code has a corresponding backup code)

Now if you don't have it, it'll be a case by case basis since each site has a different ways of handling this kind of problems.

For instance in coinbase, Since you can still access to your 2fa, you should be able to login without any problems and follow the steps below

Quote
Problem
I want to move my 2FA codes to a new device and still have the old device

Solution
Log in to Coinbase using your username/password and a 2FA code from your old device

Go to your Security Settings page: https://www.coinbase.com/settings/security_settings
Regenerate your secret key

Note: Regenerating your secret key will invalidate your old device tokens. Write down the new secret seed and keep it in a safe place (we recommend storing it offline on a piece of paper, USB key, or other medium you can keep secret and safe.

Scan the new secret with your new Authenticator device

As for bittrex, Refer to this: https://support.bittrex.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000198612-Troubleshooting-Two-Factor-Authentication-2FA-

Ok, so because you still have your old phone with Google auth available you have 2 options.

1. Disable 2FA auth on services you are using it currently, and after the switch with the new phone you can enable it again

And the second options (better one)

2. Go to services you are currently using 2FA and write down your "Restore codes" for 2FA authentication (sometimes the restore code is only numbers and usually you get numbers and QR code which you can save as picture so you dont make mistake by writing it down manualy)
