Is it better to exchange current cryptocurrency to alt coin or buy it with USD?

Hey, new to cryptocurrency, It just pop up into my head:
If the exchange platform will allow you to buy cryptocurrency with USD or exchange your current currency, is it always better to buy it with USD? We not gonna lose money so to speak by using USD instead other cryptocurrency, or there might be a catch?
I will need to do the math etc. but for now would like to hear your experience: rates, prices, fees involved....

You definitely have to do your own maths. There should be enough liquidity so you get the best execution price.
I am of the opinion that it is more convenient if you can buy the coin of your choice directly with fiat, it reduces the risk in price fluctuation.
Getting ETH/BTC first to buy alts means you are charged twice in commission.
Also you are exposed to the price fluctuation in both ETH/BTC and alts.

for myself I exchange some of my Eth with other Altcoin because I want to invest in some coins that I want like IGNIS and XRP.

If your goal is to have more BTC you need to measure your profits in satoshis,but if you want more usd measure it in usd.

for me.... better buy in USD ....
and then sold them to altcoin ..
But this is not an absolute choise, if altcoin/usd is good.... you can do that

Fiat is garbage, it has no backing, and will only go down in value. Buy crytos and physical gold or silver to retain ur purhasing power

Generally speaking, the purchase of cryptocurrency (such as BTC) in USD requires a service fee.
It is quite expensive to purchase other altcoins with BTC, which is quite expensive, so I usually buy altcoin directly using USDT (if allowed).

Yes it is as usd has stable value compared with crypto, here's an example about that, if you are wanna buy altcoin with bitcoin and then sometimes your bitcoin value can decrease a lot. But the advantages by use bitcoin if the price of bitcoin goes up and then you will get more altcoin rather than use usd to buy crypto or altcoin.
rates is having a big role in this case.

I find that BTC-Altcoin market to have more liquidity. In any case, I use the trading pair which I am able to buy coins cheaper at the time of trading.
