https://ripplecharts.com/market/XRP/USD:Bitstamp

The value of the chart for today seems quite confusing.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Thank you.

Can some one explain me the advantages of Ripple?
I do not see any use for it in its current state.

XRP dropped in value in tandem with all of the 'coins' due to statements made by the Chinese and French governments about the validity of such currencies.

The advantage of the Ripple system is that you can send any amount of money, to anyone, any where, at any time, in any currency, instantly for next to nothing. So, if I wanna send some money to my parents....or if I want to exchange money before I go on a trip....or if I want to loan a friend some dough....etc. Pretty much anything that you do with normal money....just instantly and without all those damn bank fees, transaction fees, etc.

the problem is the gateways

Of course, ripple without gateways is nothing. However, ripple + gateways provides value that gateways alone do not provide - you can move between different currencies handled by different gateways with very little overhead.
Sending to arbitrary people is not possible as long as there is no way for them to receive money - but using the bridge mechanism you can send at least bitcoins (and probably some larger alt coins too, didn't check that) to arbitrary bitcoin addresses. Don't know when it will be possible to send EUR or USD into bank accounts directly, but they're probably already working on that.
