You can use it to buy drugs, or items.

And you can mine it or buy it. You can also find someone that has bitcoins and wants to give some of them for something you have (digital goods, service, and so on).

Just like all money. You can sell for a profit, work for bitcoin, or buy and sell between different currencies. A simple way that I use is to buy some bitcoin when the price is low, then spend it when the price goes up. It is like buying everything at a discount.
