Hello--

A friend and I are making a joint-investment into crypto mining and have secured a location which has plentiful 220v electricity and adequate HVAC systems to accomodate 10-20 ASIC miners. As such we want to set up a terminal server to allow us to login to the ASIC miners control panels and monitor temps, change pools etc.

We want to set up this terminal server as a GPU mining rig and have a couple of questions if someone could be so kind as to answer them. We plan on running a Windows machine and plan on utilizing NiceHash or possibly another pool if any suggestions seem plausible.

We currently have:

7 x MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8GB
1 x LEPA G Series G1600-MA 1600 Watt 80 Plus Gold Modular ATX

Will be buying:

1 x ASUS PRIME Z270-P LGA 1151
1 x Intel Pentium G4400 SkyLake 3.3 GHz
1 x Undetermined SSD

Questions:

1. Will 1600w be able to power seven 1070s? More importantly, using one PSU leaves you limited by the amount of cables/connectors that come with the unit. We will be using powered riser boards. Can we buy adapters/splitters for the current 10 PCIe power cords to allow for more connections, or should we ditch this PSU and buy two of equal power? Additionally, can the PCIe power cords that have been split be plugged into two different card types, i.e. one cable powering both the GPU as well as the riser board without causing over/under draw issues and risk of hardware/fire?

2. Does the size of the hard drive matter in relation to the amount of cards being utilized on the miner (60gb vs 120gb SSD)?

3. How bad is the performance of the machine while mining? As stated before we plan on using the rig as a terminal server for rebooting/monitoring ASIC machines on the same network.

Thanks in advance!

1. 1600w should have absolutely no issues, 1070s work most efficiently with lowered power limit, my systems with 6 1070s and 1000w psu have been stable for more than a year now, power draw is around 750w with my setup. As for psu cables, 2 gpus max for pci-e cable, most 1070s come with 1x 8pin power so the cables on your psu should be adequate without any additional adapters. 3 molex for risers off single cable or 1 sata for riser off single cable max, avoid using sata or molex to sata adapters if possible. Personally I haven't run into issues with those, but I use max of one per rig but I've seen people with burned cables so beware.
2. SSD size doesn't really matter, some algos will require larger swap file, I've set mine to 32gb and never had problems, although I like 128gb ssds in my rigs for resale value and convenience.
3. This depends on the algo and miner used, some have little to no performance impact, some will render desktop basically unusable, typically this can be worked around by setting low intensity to the primary gpu, or simply mining low intensity algo like cryptonight for example.

That  psu has multiple 12 volt rails it may or may not be easy to use it for your job.

you need to properly balance it.

this psu is perfect  one  12 volt rail

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/ax1500i-digital-atx-power-supply-1500-watt-fully-modular-psu-refurbished

it has 10 pcie/cpu jacks

you can use 9 dual head 8 pin  pcie plugs

they sell spares

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/type-3-flat-black-ribbon-cable-pcie-6-2-pin-dual-connectors-compatible-with-all-type-3-pin-out-psu

so if you plug in 9 of these

you have 18    6 +2 pcie jacks  that allows  max of 9   1070 gpus.

the lepa  note the rails
you must not over load them

Thank you this was very helpful. How would you recommend balancing the rails?

Also do you know if it is possible to connect a 6-pin riser card directly from the PSU (with or without a splitter on the cable), or is that not safe?
