I heard you can earn DeepOnions through bounties on their official forums. There are many starter coins out there that probably have an amount set aside for bounties and increasing awareness of that coin, you just gotta dig a bit.

Some coins are proof of stake.  You will have to acquire coins first, but then they start generating more over time as long as you keep your wallet open and running.  Many coins have this feature.
