I guess it was needed to separate the weed, but it personally hurts me. I am a long time member, and now in the mercy of people to achieve next level. I would rather have a more deterministic way to get there - activity is definitely one metric, but blocking promotion based on additional merit collection is unjust. Of course I am biased as I am getting screwed in the process, and I can see tons of hero members who joined in the bitcoin world lot later than me, and are now hero just because they joined bitcointalk at the right time when the activity crap came on.

It is kinda harsh on those that are basically alone here, so to speak. There should be an incentive to spend sMerits on quality posts. No clue on how that could possibly be done, though.

How you guys thinks about MERIT? good? or?
any opinion ?
Well for me merit is a good thing that implemented by the administrator theymos, it will make the person here to be responsible to post with value. It is a kind of thing that can incourage the person to do the work with high quality, also since everyone is permitted to give merit to someone's post so all will surely working together as one community here, I am really happy for this one because we will now feel the presence of all.

Well to tell you frankly... I feel really disappointed about that MERIT thing they are putting in this forum... So I could not be promoted anymore because I'm sure that I will never get the required MERITS so that I will be promoted... no one cares here to give anyone a MERIT.. not everyone here are the likes of the Good Samaritan, so this thing is just a hindrance for low ranking members like us to become legendary members just like you! We are desperate, hungry and thirsty to be promoted to a much higher rank but why are you stopping us from being promoted?

I agree. Also this completely takes away the incentive of spending time on the forum, and making general posts. Even if you make quality post, it is unlikely to collect enough merit. It is almost like rich getting richer and poor remaining poor scheme.

Lol that is wrong mentality, do not think merit system will stack you in your current ranked you should know what is the main purpose of this new features of this forum. Make it a challenge to change our way of posting from shit to good quality.

But to be honest, you won't get any if all you can do is post bounty entries.

The users who care about this forum. If you keep making good posts, you will get merits at some point.

And before you ask what is a "good post", I would say that if you make insightful posts insted of posts whose sole purpose is to increase your activity, you are in the right track.

Of course, I agree with that. Issue is, lots of people who made fluff post went much ahead of me, as I tend to not post if I do not have something to say. I am here since 2013, and it was not my interest to climb up the rank by racking up "activity" or "post count". In fact, when I joined, "post count" alone was enough, as the concept of "activity" came later. So, I definitely pissed off at all the free riders who are "hero member" or above now by doing the exact same thing the "merit" system is intended to prevent. I am also pissed at myself that I should have done the same thing, and now stuck in an unjust way. It is hard for you to digest, I guess.

It was well intended I think and to me it has several pros and cons but I think the pro of less spam on the forums is heavily outweighed by the cons that are now in our current system.

PROS

-less spam
--less bots and farmers
---more quality posting

CONS

-unfair to those who were about to rank up
--merit points not distributed fairly either (distro between ranks)
---merit points not distrbuted fairly amongst same ranks; ie how does somebody with 121 activity and 239 activity get same merit points?
----system is too political now and some may give up after not receiving any or little merits for a while

Really good point here, I think merit system needs a lot of improvement. It is not good for new members. Beside sMerit there should be another way to get merit points, like 1 merit for every 50 posts, 1 merit for 1 month with 50 posts or something similar, as now it depends only on merit spreaders to whom they want to give merit points.

Currently it is too early to say anything, however most probably sooner or later we'll see the improvements and your suggestion is also good.

Well i actually agree with that you, look at my activity it's absolutely near from hero, and it's not fair for people who wants grow their rank but stuck on their merits 400 activity but only get 250 (sr.member) what a.. but show must go on, it's not bad stuck on this rank by the way, maybe next update the sum of merits to rank up will going more small than now, they should think about that.

I think the MERIT System is actually a great way to give members in this community an ample time to improve the quality of their posting. I do read a lot although I have not posted anything or commented anything in this forum but I made sure by the time I have something to say I would be able to communicate through posting comments the answer to some questions on this forum. Of course I also want to help out my fellow crypto community members to better understand these currencies because a lot of them really have negative feedbacks and would always tell me to withdraw my holdings in trading.

I've got over 2,000 posts made in a little over two years. Most of those were made at the start of my membership, and from a desire to further my interest in Bitcoin. I made some controverial posts, and some stupid ones as a result of my lack of knowledge. Did I contribute to the forum? I like to think so because some of the "big names" here replied to my questions, and were extremely helpful and informative. I was lucky because in those days it was possible to have a sensible discussion in the Frog Forum, and beginner's questions were moved to the beginners board. As a result of being active, I've racked up a reasonable post count, and until the merit system arrived, I only needed to make one post of indifferent quality per activity period to gain promotion. Why would 2 posts per month of indifferent quality mean that I should be Legendary rather than just a simple Hero? Of course the answer is that it doesn't.

I'm happy to contribute to the forum and enter into informed discussions, but please give me somewhere to do it. You can help by frequenting the serious discussion boards until the herons get to the Frog Pond, and the thread weeds are closed.

excuse me no much time to search now
what is that merit ? i have 100 and i see that some people have less, what is the reason?
what is that for?
This information come from Theymos
In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member300
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000
~
Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

This Merit System looks really good on the paper, but it definitely hurts the people that can't spend too much time on the forum and be engaged in discussions, but still use the forum. For instance, I translate stuff and I allocate most of my time on the translations or applying and reading about the Bounty Campaigns etc.

I honestly feel a little lost here. How the hell am I supposed to get Merits as a Jr Member? It is way easier to get them if you are an already established member of the community. I personally fear it will take me a long time to get out of Jr Member, mainly because people would be less incentivized to Merit me due to my already-low Rank.

Take it easy, bro. You have to post at least 60 posts for gaining 60 activities, right? This figure is the minimum to be upgraded to Member rank without merit scores. With merit points, what you need is 10 points, that mean only 10/60 or around 17% of your posts qualified and received merits. That's enough for you, right?

In fact, you have to post about 100 constructive, high-qualitied ones in order to get 10 merits from others, I guess, but it is possible task for you.

Let's go and write as constructive posts as possible.

Well to tell you truthfully... I really feel discouraged in this MERIT system they are putting in this Forum... for me it is a big discrimination to low ranking members like us... you deny us the opportunity to earn more and you deny us from being promoted to a much higher rank, I guess all those high ranking members will gonna still gonna receive the highest payment in every Signature Campaign and all of those low ranking members like me will maintain the most lowest payment in Signature Campaign.
