Hello guys,

just a little noob question, since I'm doing so research on mining rigs to be able to build my own. But I dont want just to buy stuff and burn money unless I understand what I'm doing.

So I've read that 13 GPU's are max on one Rig. And that this is because this mining motherboard from AsRock has 13 PCI-E 1x slots. But now I've come across this:

https://www.amazon.com/Crest-Transfer-adapter-Extension-SI-PEX60018/dp/B077GVDMNB/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1517060061&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=4+in+1+riser+x16+x1

This (as I understood it) allows you to put 4 GPU's per 1x slot. Wont I be able to user 4x13=52 GPU's per rig then?

I thank you for all helpful tips regarding building the first mining rig. Related to this question or not. Maybe if you can be so kind and "go back in time" to the time you were building your first rig, which tip would you give your old self with the wisdom you have now?

My opinion is that to increase the number of GPU on one rig is futile. The best option for me is a 6 GPU on one rig. Periodically, the rigs shut down. Also they need to serve. The downtime of your equipment is your loss. Big savings on the increase in the number of GPU in the same rig, you also get. Think about it.

Max is 13 GPU for one rig, on special btc+ mobo's, but remember what 13 gpu will run only under linux

So I've read that 13 GPU's are max on one Rig. And that this is because this mining motherboard from AsRock has 13 PCI-E 1x slots. But now I've come across this:

Windows has limited max 8 GPUs on the system, and Linux (13 maybe). But with a few trick, we can add more than 8 GPUs on Windows.

This (as I understood it) allows you to put 4 GPU's per 1x slot. Wont I be able to user 4x13=52 GPU's per rig then?

People out there even try so hard to set up 10-13 GPUs. And stability issue will be the main problems for broke the limit.

I think the best 6, maximum 8 cards per Rig

You are totally wrong , incorrect !!! And probably talking about something you don't have any experience Smiley You dont need any trick to use more than 8 AMD or Nvida gpus on one system under windows , as the new amd driver / nvidia driver and a windows update  support 12 cards , and with some trick you can make a few extra amd or nvidia cards to work on top of that 12 Wink

You can run 12 AMD RX or 12 Nvidia cards easy under windows , and if you know what you doing how to set up your rig properly , you not going to have any problem !
if you want more than 12-13 cards , you must to mix nVidia / AMD / And mining cards

With ASUS B250 MINING EXPERT its possible to run more than 19 GPU's under windows , but you have to mix nVidia / AMD / And mining cards .

12 AMD Radeon RX 470 on one rig + 8 Mining cards Smiley thats 20 under windows

running 13 cards  is enough.  yeah more can be done  but mobos are cheap. compared to cards.

also have a 13 card psu die and you will not like putting a new one.

I have a 13 card mobo it works fine.

I have a lot of riser free 6 card boards and 8 card boards.

I would say  any of above is fine.

trying to exceed 13 cards on the 13 card board will not be fun if you have to troubleshoot the gear.

there is a 19 card board.

but trust me settle for 13 and when a rig dies and you have to wire it over you will realize bigger is not better.

I run 13 RX 480/580 in Windows v1709 with the AMD Adrenaline drivers on the ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ motherboard with no problems. The older Windows AMD blockchain and earlier drivers have an 8 card limit.

I run 13 RX 580 in Windows v1709 with the AMD Adrenaline drivers on the ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ motherboard with no problems. The older Windows AMD blockchain and earlier drivers have an 8 card limit.

I run 13 on this build from automaker.at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a5zXdRMxxc

to me running 6 1080tis on the riser free onda b250 board using a large atx is my favorite build.

I leave 2 slots empty as the rig pulls almost 1200 watts against the 1500 watt corsair Ax1500i

I get 4200 sols and trouble shooting is not too hard.

the rigs can be picked up and moved by 1 person and that is  a nice feature.

It's not about putting your cards more than 8, and run smoothly without problems, right? even many posts here about getting trouble with the only 5-6 card. Picking the drivers, Patching etc, it is isn't trick? Sound like, you just plug and mining smoothly.

Thank you all for your help. Now I'm one step closer to my rig and richer on the wisdom side of things.

My question has been answered, but, as stated in my first post, any further tips are very welcome. You also are evry welchome to continue your debate on how much GPUs you think SHOULD be used max on 1 rig, even tho more are possible. Its always nice to see many answers and reasons for them to a specific question.

Windows has limited max 8 GPUs on the system, and Linux (13 maybe). But with a few trick, we can add more than 8 GPUs on Windows.
People out there even try so hard to set up 10-13 GPUs. And stability issue will be the main problems for broke the limit.

Also you can send me helpful links to articles or videos regarding building a minign rig, just as xxcsu did.
Its not like I cant find them myself, but there are already so many, as the crypto community is growing, so you might have a Video where you would say this one is a MUST WATCH or this one explains a specific matter very deeply.

And again, thank you all for your help. Smiley

Actually Windows 10 can add upto 12-13 GPUs, just update to 1709 version. To check Windows version Run>winver

As i said earlier you are totally wrong ! and misleading members with your post !

Windows 10 dont have a 8 card max limit , you have to use patch for amd cards only if you modded your bios .
so one more times ... you dont need to do anything special to put together a 12 cards mining rigs !
With factory bios on amd cards just install your cards , latest driver (set to Compute), and you are ready to go
same thing with nvidia ... You dont need any trick ... But you need your Brain Wink

The main thing it boil's down to is STABILITY! Like someone else already stated, the downtime is your biggest loss. Also who wants the headaches of that many GPU's on one rig. Because i would be so paranoid everytime the fan speed changed thinking. " is it gonna crash" .

Just stick with 6 GPU's or maybe 7 per rig.

BTW, i tried those PCIE expansion cards, DID not work for me and my MB. But they do work just not for every MB. IMO those are only good for if you only have like 2 or 3 PCIE slots period on a MB. Then you could expand to 6 PCIE on a MB with only 2 or 3 PCIE slots, IF the MB and CPU like to play well together.

Yeah, it's good, thanks for the update. It is a friendly reminder.

That's I mean, I agree with you. Didn't all miner use one type, one vendor in one rig. One of my rigs has 1xRx 480, 1xRx 580, 1xR9 295x2, 1xR9 290, 1xR9 290x, the whole cards with a different vendor. The other rigs have same type and vendor. So we can't generally say that how easy to build 1 rig.

The main thing it boil's down to is STABILITY! Like someone else already stated, the downtime is your biggest loss.
If your rig is not stable its mean you overclocked / undervolted your cards way to much , or you have a bad bios mod .
Members dowloading bios from the internet and flashing those bioses to they cards ... They not even sure what is they bios version number , flashing your card with different bios version create instability on your system !!! and can brick you cards ! or you going to get hashrate jumping up and down !

Down time ? If your gpu not hashing , its mean that gpu not working , check the cooling fan if its stopped , thats the bad card , turn of you 21 cards rig , remove your non working cards , and you ready to go with 20 cards ... down time is a minute or less ... Put that card into your computer and see what you can do with it ...
Or if one of your card have a problem like not stable hashrate , turn off that card with your miner program , wait 5 minutes , then that card going to cool down , so the cooling fan going to stop , so you know what card you need to be remmove , during this time you still mining with your 20 another cards ... turn off your mining rig , remove that card ( 1 minutes down time )  , then start your rig with 20 cards , and fine tune your removed card with OverDrivenTool or any tune program in your pc ! check for memory errors with HWinfo ...

That is why You always have to fine tune each cards separately Smiley
There is a option in afterburner for that , or you can use OverDrivenTool to set up frequency / voltage for each cards Smiley

Sorry my fault , i thought windows 10 is part of the "windows" family  Grin

You dont have to set the driver to compute mod , but without that you going to get reduced hashrate , a few MH/s less than that function turned on Smiley So yes that a trick if you want a few extra MH/s , but not a trick if you want 12 GPU running under windows with deafault settings Grin

At least you learned a few things today Smiley
✅1- You can run 12 cards easy on windows with the latest drivers Smiley
✅2- as you said :

It's only different view, The main point is answered. Let's deal with it.  Tongue
