I'm using bitcoin-qt version v0.8.3.0-g40809ae-beta and I have 8 connections but the block number is not moving. Anyone else see this?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

restart bitcoin-qt. this will reconnect you to new peers and hopefully get you a faster peer.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I ran bitcoin-qt with --reindex and it's passed the stuck block.

Try to restart, if that doesn't work then maybe you should check if your antivirus/firewall has suddenly started blocking it. New updates cause this sometimes & has been known to block Bitcoin clients.
