Hey All,

I'm considering an online Wallet. Any advise and information you can share would be appreciated. I'm thinking more along the lines of buying/selling/trading. If I'm not at home and want to sell some, I'd be best to have an online Wallet?

Which service(s) do you use and how has your experience been?

What are the delays like when trying to buy/sell etc?

Can online Wallets (services) be more secure than having a Wallet on your PC or Mac?

Thanks,
jmevz

Blockchain.info does nearly everything that I need and yet don't need to download the entire blockchain to use it. I like it that there is also an android app. A four digit pin can be set for password protection. My favorite feature is that I can sweep a balance from a cold storage paper wallet. Transactions are extremely fast because confirmation time is short between accounts that use blockchain.info, and there are many people that use it.

My second-favorite online phone wallet is Mycelium Wallet. You can set a six digit pin, but I find that a bit longer than necessary. Mycelium doesn't have a lot of features, but what really makes it stand out is that you can sweep a specific amount from a cold-storage private key and have it sent to a public key that you can enter. For those that use cold-storage it means that you don't have to wait for confirmation to your own wallet before spending to another, and the money doesn't need to get re-associated with your normal accounts just to spend it.

Why do you want to use an offline wallet? A desktop wallet is more secure and does not require trust.

Actually a server is probably more secure than your desktop computer, but still you need to trust the operator. Given the long history of Bitcoin, I would not trust any single operator - not even Satoshi.

I disagree. Most people lose their wallets to malware/trojans.

I use blockchain.info and coinbase!

Keep your coins in your control. On an online wallet you no longer control them, and just have to hope they give them back when you ask.

I'd say most people lose their wallets to carelessness; with that said, if carelessness is a person's weakness, an online wallet would likely be safer than an offline wallet, but a properly maintained offline wallet is still preferable to those who want the extra security.

An online wallet is not going to protect you against carelessness. Invalid argument.

Not all carelessness, but having someone else worry about a secure wallet leaves you with just worrying about 2FA and a strong password; a server owner is going to be much more worried about keeping his computers free from malware than the careless person.

I use blockchain.info and inputs.

and a offline wallet is clearly superior. however, the average person is just too careless.

If your computer has malware it doesn't matter if you use a offline or online wallet. It's only a matter of time before the wallet providers gets added to the list of Paypal and banks.

I work in the field. Believe me, there are very sophisticated malware that bypasses 2FA by swapping out requests.

Sure.  So, as I said, the careless person is better off having someone else worry about a clean PC to store the wallet on.

What? I don't understand, if your PC isn't secure then you will lose your Bitcoins, online or offline.

EDIT: I've lost 2 BTC on my coinbase wallet because I was phished (password reuse, I use ubuntu), this wouldn't have happened if I had an offline wallet. So it's even less secure in some ways.

An online wallet is much much less secure.

It's a bigger target. Who do you think attackers will use 0 days on: some random IP address, or a wallet provider that stores hundreds or thousands of coins?

You need to trust your network. There are numerous documented security flaws against SSL, I can MITM your connection, MITM third party resources, etc.

You need to trust their network, ie cloudflare.

It requires trust. Look at MyBitcoin for how that turned out.

It is hard to have clean computer connected to internet and used daily, fortunatelly malware does not targets bitcoin now much
