Hello, I recently just started getting into all of this and I'm having some issues with getting my first worker going. Let me first explain what I've done so far

1. Downloaded Bitcoin-Wallet and finished syncing it.
2. Chosen a pool (I went with deepbit)
3. Registered on deepbit's website, and put in my receiving address (found in my wallet)
4. Installed "GUIMiner - v2012-12-03"
5. Selected "deepbit" in the server list
6. Chosen my device to be "[0-1] AMD FX(tm)-6120 Six-Core" only because the other option just says "turks" and I have no idea what that means.
7. CPU Affinity checked off at 0. I'm assuming the more you enable the better you do, but I just want to get it going first.
8. Pressed "Start Mining"

Now at the bottom of the screen it just says "Shares: 0 accepted" and "Connecting...". It has been this way for an hour. Also on the deepbit website my worker name is still in red with 0.00 MH/s.

So my question is, what should I do?

Are you under a firewall?

I'm not, but I just looked at the console log and realized it was just an incorrect username and password. I made adjustments and it works! I previously didn't know there was actually an error with that.

I suggest p2pool - it's more decentralized than other pools.
