I started out with the best intentions: open patrol, and Merit some Newbie's posts. I couldn't find any, and instead, I started reporting posts. I especially dislike posts saying "great project", they don't add anything, they're probably shill-accounts, they're creating insubstantial posts to rank up, and there are hundreds of accounts doing the same! I've been downloading patrol since the AlexPromotion-spam, but only kept data from the past 6 days. I ran a case insensitive search on "great project", and in the past 6 days alone 735 different Newbie-accounts posted that phrase. My AlexPromotion-report was 100% accurate, this one is not! But when I look at the post history of these users, most of them are worthless. There are more phrases that are being reused over and over again. Example: I found some false positives: My search included all quoted "great project" too. Some, like KeeperOfCoins clearly don't deserve to be on my list, while others, like Olaide06 are probably bots. Is this something Mods want to pursue? The entire list needs manual checking, but I expect a large part can be nuked. I am willing to manually reduce the list in some bored hours if a Mod takes action after that. My complete list (I choose clickable over code-tags): wentdreamsniffintradessamwilliamsayoelsherbenyNiko2017KunleofficialRrelXRrelbitshahzada123Walid128Viliambethlopez020808jhoanneSilver166BitcoinStreamashkie22tigerMJyangtonybogsgirish123Flex345manish2447SophyyKennethenolomakin.ivanodisomajorivorychrisAhmed4119btcdedsAlainBKKAnyone01vinodrsamsterBarry001hadroncloudFeeliksPraveen BhardwajMiddleFingerToTheManCrytomasterGmanUtrechtBLTCVyacheslav7000doctorhyipkampret4545a.zivertPaule-2345adelynkngisi93mlssirebelJahanamSceatk3jaguar66vandumenrajpaclInvested4futuremizzyaEben_olussnaptrckMontero2018sabrinamaria1Raphael93Jn_Ec9397berburu dokuxskubixTu ThanhggokidokjayhalLeckter13koplokjayarellanochixijaneaykutaksoyydebsintechloysBeforememberultimatecryptoSubzyPuff Pastry Hangmansammyonehousebrownie_somethingsaldriassfinancialfreedomcriscyptoJoekondomacayubdenpiratesparekouhCherry_The_Countessololade120JaneClaciosolid8babelynanizpkGabrielPontellojepjep00CryptovineRainmaker45mayela01klimenok1991viper1909CrackDonaldNoadconsult3Kikomoncryptouser63Sagacious18BlackCrypto29NadhilJanitrabennaniLavie1124Valz009vivekagarwalbknBarontRoManus145nicholasogbHotbaba1nistopopkerv12arbl0422segfadinKinkadeinspiredflashmoniltdfreshtytvicsyliciousSkyyatravb26AinezBitcoinerxqusimyusuffxHodl_till_homelesssyang2candyman220dz4mitmitos44IntroNumericsaintwudibackup.contact999applepie_tidbitzjayjoseDemenJoejiwangukid007tzantza_bogdanBayuanggaraDaffarajdmanuge4u2winDlex24RahulkemiegraceyYoko333myousaf002zafiramaghfurrokayabtobwesleyridhohandriyantomahdifastervoiloomarcostocco93Anthony AnhHalitimecryptadiktanhlp1neeplokiDonePrincemaduka15jamalbakkhaiemCurrency_Boyprocomkizzone69Rakovzvizgmycrypto93Kumar AugustineLarzenNatty10Q1906GarthanjesXmarritomelindMustaqeem147bobbyzzfredainenafez1Aigunawan95elemdylamididucaalfaTravels999Ahaameedasif1EnriICOPasssecretgodjkwasiuSumartiniYettybabyEric CointonaAqhi69clickmastaFrankkie2DENARO.IOvrushcUmaryeJimmy_CoinProsper01pooh111Gokay4141Zion30daosylam1990coinsolencemasterdisasterPrivat2017Bigrayzivrytwr3shirlyo17singlecrytpochuckz143roni rahmanAndrea29ishwar377FOUAD1994YangStevensWarptrooperKawsar_DAPiet246dubr0vskyAndruha1993telexnetworkPuffyreallakira1972akira2005skhanmashwaniPrasadyelmna110itssawaiGilasSMS5riqui125koolkheartHennypenny59Christopher EvesAdam Palvinherro2017yoshislandfifycurencyhekimogluburaketemhshakir15coinboy2017MercyGkemijibbz001lupee0323Assetastil3ttoDhara1capitalbtcIvolveROlaide06alaaddinhaipham195Borngreat23FelipeSanonKeeperOfCoinsAniolatttuantrausingha10angelaurumprashantcrypto2krypticcoincryptopartymuhammeday61arinze8888D2guns_21YurafTorn80betaTipuSultan24luckynegara20Feybyenelturrcobiboy01cryto_phoenixikramhaidersooybinlordwindphakud8990tharindu.somesahadatthedajinkya1396lalit01pratikawasareanilkumarakbSapnuji@Vimal1992Zantharmaah75gresh23DilipisharaEmeebisiznikiknowsnothingMaster_nodermarchendayesaginHeroofcoinadamcoin83laramcoinLucas amosTimcheerful11scholes83friendsfingersBCRDevbttmembercabaymauumakenggungagungachinny286dgcrypto2Kamal.strong365omaraha111BeurlzkarburatorRomanovicGiseleGarnetoliver1975Devil995bolarisbernard12345IrenjoshCajn1fahim786CryptoMiner88moneyneed1KomorhanOlumide1000belibis26Altamash Kkidsnowspartasparta007mvplolsamiran19tatyanaaaanaim559ivan_lzreldzinan05phantrongthiemcoldflame821cebongciliksaidur3419OMLETovichSanuStricoRaj81chadhaashishrahul338725kekesonnaderba666Nwanyieze1Carseasseb12000MarksmaniodrillsmYuniarrmspivorcointaunspanolesbalukoOliviateebethereumVictorheywhyboussaidshaman11jikookMonicgrayangeluhihuWalang-kekekFlaverflankbJeanCoinTchallapoi35bismillaaminvmazhardBillygentrrmzbaig@gmail.comoskar007CryptoPlushkinikki92Pchowgeoffromblessed101nascryptoGalacXRahim2984Hurkacoinbarat2000chizaram_vikitaangelbeatzprod4ripinCallahan93JazzyJeffkenhdautuJack tom

Unfortunately this isn't exclusive to newbies for the last few months I've been reporting these types of posts manually every day and I wonder whether sometimes if the staff who have to deal with the reports are getting annoyed especially if they have email notifications turned for reports so maintaining a list like this is probably a good idea. Literally hundreds of accounts each day post these responses as well as other ones like "To the moon" and other insubstantial replies. I pity the mods that have to read these types of replies/reports and deal with them. I lose a brain cell every time I report one of these replies.
Some stricter restrictions probably need to be put in place because as soon as you deal with 1 another 10 users have posted identical replies. Some are bots, some are people who struggle with English and some are just bumping the topic and are likely alt accounts of the ICO. I'm not sure what could prevent this issue though. I don't think any sort of moderation could possibly deal with the amount of replies which get posted per hour there. Possibly making the section self moderated threads only and the topic starter is responsible for clearing out these types of replies and if they don't do it their thread gets trashed.
It's also started to leak into the project development section too.

Unfortunately this isn't exclusive to newbies As far as I know, there is no way for me to download all new posts. Only Newbie's posts show up in patrol. Possibly making the section self moderated threads only and the topic starter is responsible for clearing out these types of replies and if they don't do it their thread gets trashed. I make my threads self-moderated (turns out I couldn't do that in Meta). But it doesn't work if the topic starter doesn't care, I've seen self-moderated threads with hundreds of pages filled with spam. In a self-moderated thread you can use your middle-mouse on the delete-button. This opens a new tab, and deletes the post without popup asking for confirmation. This is a very fast way to delete spam. It's also started to leak into the project development section too. This is the worst part, which I've noticed too. It's one thing if they pollute the Altcoin Bounties and Off-topic boards, but reading their spam on the serious boards is much worse.

I'm surprised thast there isn't a restriction here that prevents new members from posting anywhere other than in the beginners forum until they have made 10 posts, or achieved a certain rank. I would have thought that would make the forum easier to moderate, and may cut down on the creation of alts.

When I joined there was a Newbie jail but for some reason that I never worked out, it has was done away with a long time ago. I would be all for bringing it back.

Great project @LoyceV ok, just joking. they can maybe set a characters limit needed to post the comment, for example, minimum 15 characters are needed to post it, but i guess they will surely find another way

This is exactly what I was proposed to theymos.. Maybe it is not a solution or good thing to discussed about or it seem like my post doesn't reach him or ignored by many.. Well maybe some of you can give a comments or discussing about it? or maybe I'll just keep silent reading or look other place to discuss and just keep try earn bounty with this rank level.. This is the link Suggestion 3

I've had to stop doing that as I run into the 4 second report limit. As long as it's on topic, and is adding to the discussion then I don't see why we should limit people by not letting them comment on an abandoned project. I'm surprised thast there isn't a restriction here that prevents new members from poating anywhere other than in the beginners forum until they have made 10 posts, or achieved a certain rank. I would have thought that would make the forum easier to moderate, and may cut down on the creation of alts.
The problem with this is it's not just newbies with <10 posts doing these types of posts. Yes they are the majority, but I've collected a nice list of users who are posting these types of messages. There needs to be some sort of restriction in the altcoin section, but I'm not entirely sure what that could be. I've brainstormed and looked at some other peoples input and a lot of the solutions either have big downfalls or restrict the genuine users. Believe it or not but there's actual discussion that goes on in those threads that are spammed with these types of replies.

I've had to stop doing that as I run into the 4 second report limit. I've seen that limitation many times while Reporting posts, but never on deleting them. It must take me more than 4 seconds to decide to delete one. The problem with this is it's not just newbies with <10 posts doing these types of posts. Yes they are the majority, but I've collected a nice list of users who are posting these types of messages. If only I could download all posts including the ones made from older accounts! There needs to be some sort of restriction in the altcoin section, but I'm not entirely sure what that could be. The altcoin section is some sort of free-for-all Wild West at the moment, almost any post is only there to earn money, from selling scamtokens to spamming for bounties.

Patrol is still filled with useless "great project" posts.

Hey LoyceV,
Just found this project as I was searching through and I know Theymos used to get staff to mod the patrol links. And that was part of what they had to do, they were special staff from the moderators though as they only had the ability to delete replies from newbies (I think) and no higher ranks (though I'm not entirely sure what the patrol link does, I just know a user - lauda i think it was - was one of the users put in charge of doing that). TBF it's been at least 6 months since the thread where I discussed it with them and even then it was just two posts so I don't remember it that well. Though I'll try to do some digging at some point. It's quite a nice effort you have put in and P.S. if you downloaded the entire patrol pages, can I have a copy? I want to run analytics on it to view stats on small posts (posts with less than 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 chars to check how insubstantial they are and to see if there is anything else that can be gathered from that trend) if you want to do it yourself, then I offer this as a suggestion instead (or if you know a way of downloading them from archive.org as this forum's data ends up there daily as a mirror but I think it's just the public stuff).

Just found this project as I was searching through and I know Theymos used to get staff to mod the patrol links. As far as I know, that's the reason patrol exists. But it's a terrible amount of messages, mostly low quality, and much more than any human should deal with. At best, you can check a very small percentage. And that was part of what they had to do, they were special staff from the moderators though as they only had the ability to delete replies from newbies (I think) and no higher ranks (though I'm not entirely sure what the patrol link does The patrol page shows all recent posts made by Newbies. That's about it. As far as I know, all Mods can nuke Newbies. (Nuking them means a permban that deletes all their posts) if you downloaded the entire patrol pages, can I have a copy? I download patrol every 5 minutes. So far I've seen at least 10 minutes history on patrol, so several of my downloads overlap. I don't keep them permanently, I have 2856 files now (10 days history, 1.5 GB, 200 MB compressed). I can upload them somewhere if you're interested. Just so you know: it's way too much data to process manually! I want to run analytics on it to view stats on small posts (posts with less than 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 chars to check how insubstantial they are and to see if there is anything else that can be gathered from that trend) if you want to do it yourself I highly doubt this will produce anything useful, but by all means: prove me wrong! It would be interesting to see. (or if you know a way of downloading them from archive.org as this forum's data ends up there daily as a mirror but I think it's just the public stuff). Archive.org won't archive patrol as often as it regenerates.

Just so you know: it's way too much data to process manually! Yeah, I was going/hoping to automate everything in python or c# (c# is faster). I think (when I was exploring with SMF 2 years ago) every post head is in a similar html structure. Archive.org won't archive patrol as often as it regenerates. That part is purely an interest thing. I'm not sure where you'd put it. I think most suggest pastebin for plain text and I assume it's raw html that you have gathered. Is there a script you have used to gather this? I know archive.org will not function that quickly also but I don't really want to kill the forum's server by sending pings every 5 minutes. It's also a user-only privellage as far as I can gater. It would be interesting though to try to download and parse every post on the forum as a whole to check it (though I'm still trying to work out how to download from archive.org to do this, I did have a script that attempted to clone every page on this forum directly from the forum's server (starting with 1) but it didn't incorporate the 1 second request limit so it just kept on getting a 502/503 server too busy page - it also decided to clone every link in pages because it was programmed by me so I had a copy of everyone's signature's websites for the first few signatures it picked up). Still, it would be interesting to get these general stats - especially for the patrol where everything starts (as a newbie).
The special staff members, were ones who weren't moderators and were just regular members (sort of). They weren't assigned to a specific board - which moderators generally are and were assigned to "Patrol" the forum as a whole. I think they could hand out tempabans but not completely nuke accounts. EDIT: Found these two: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1835142;sa=showPostshttps://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=992109;sa=showPostsThese were within the first 200 objects on patrol. I was just quicklly scrolling and thought they looked a bit interesting, essentially the same thing written on all of them Also went back for a little nostalgia and: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=543626;sa=showPosts;start=3400 - not particularly short and spammy, however did remeber that part where I picked on -ck at the start (just interesting to look back on - and some of it was a bit spammy or where I recommended a ponzi that stole all the coins I had then which wasn't that many) - I was really after a compairson to these newbies posts also it is worth noting, I signed up here 3 months after starting with Bitcoin.

Lol no, I can't paste 1.5 GB into pastebin Is there a script you have used to gather this? Basically, I wget "https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=recent;patrol" every 5 minutes. I don't really want to kill the forum's server by sending pings every 5 minutes. You're allowed 1 page per second, 1 per 5 minutes isn't going to kill the server. I do more than that just browsing. I did have a script that attempted to clone every page on this forum directly from the forum's server (starting with 1) but it didn't incorporate the 1 second request limit so it just kept on getting a 502/503 server too busy page A one second delay between requests fixes that. But, with more than 30 million posts, that will take at least a year. A huge waste of resources if you ask me. Did you report their posts? They do nicely fit this thread: Great project!

Good project There's a site with a 2GB share limit (wetransfer I think it's called) you can probably get a link from that or send it to jackgbtc@gmail.com whenever you get the time. Or I might just start now. And actually, you can do 20 posts a second, still very slow but... Could always go since my first post as it can't be that bad. Maybe I can get it in bulk from archive.org I know there's options to do that but it's still a lot. I will start reporting and patrolling tomorrow to offer help I'm not great at reporting posts/assessing others' quality but I'll try nonetheless I can't get anything from reporting stuff - report those two though if you can. FYI (interesting project also returns a lot of results).

There needs to be some sort of restriction in the altcoin section, but I'm not entirely sure what that could be. The altcoin section is some sort of free-for-all Wild West at the moment, almost any post is only there to earn money, from selling scamtokens to spamming for bounties. Note that the mining subforum under altcoins is generally free from this kind of idiocy*; it's just the announcements and, especially, the discussion subforums that are wastelands of cluelessness and bots. * - plenty of other kinds of idiocy to be sure, though.
