Altcoins worth small scale mining?

Is there any alt coin that's worth mining on small scale?
not looking for huge profit, just taking it for learning.

You can try coins with non-standard algorithms, like Slimcoin, Primecoin, Cryptonite or Datacoin. In most of them you'll get some rewards via CPU mining or low-scale GPU mining (if possible).

Don't expect high profits, but if it's "for learning" it should be OK

Do you have any real life experience to back up the claims you make above?

I disagree on the following :

"monitor the temperature is must for the mining" - On a small scale this is not necessary, CPU mining will produce heat but in my opinion not enough to warrant keeping track of it past the first day. On small GPU scale I set the fan speed or plan and forget it.

CPU mining doesn't pull a lot of power like GPUs can. I don't see how it is harmful either, granted you have a stable rig and proper wiring in your house, but that would be the case for any electronics.


What are you planning on using to mine, I can make some basic suggestions.

I don't really see however why I'll need to monitor heat all time on small scale mining, just set the fan to max and leave it.

I haven't set my mind yet, but probably I'll use my PC at university and set it to 50% output for couple hours a day, I'm more interested in the process of setting up the whole thing, be it just a miner, light node, full node, pool, stratum proxy. Ideally I'd like to reach the stage to fork some coin source code, do some dump edits (like changing rewards, block time, etc.) and make a small coin network in the lab.

You can try looking for altcoins with low mining difficulty which means only few people are competing to mine it. so you dont need to have multiple mining hardware to be able to effectively mine that specific coin. i cant recommend any coin with that low mining difficulty because i have never tried cryptocurrency mining. maybe you can look for the least famous and a gpu or cpu mineable altcoin.
