Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

If everything is dropping, it's typically normal market movement. They tend to rebound in unison after a while, too. It looks like Bitcoin has hit a record low, but you honestly shouldn't worry about it. Things like this happen all the time. It may seem daunting if you're new to crypto, but at some point you'll just learn to dismiss it. The sooner you can do that, the better.

Meanwhile, here's an article that tries to explain why the market isn't doing too well right now:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/apos-why-bitcoin-ethereum-ripple-202800064.html

Emphasis on tries, because no one really knows for sure why the market moves the way it does. If it truly is caused by the Bitfinex issue, then we may be stuck in a rut for a while. This whole issue about Tethers was just a disaster waiting to happen from the start.

Alot of panic selling i suspect. When bitcoin falls the rest follow suit....like a domino effect but it will calm down and return to business as usual. With that said this does present a great opportunity for anyone new to enter the crypto space as prices are very attractive.

Aside the technical explanations that comes with it,which i cant explain clearly Grin Grin, it can also be noticed that dropping in price has always being an issue at the beginning of the year for the past few years. Just check the trends for prices in the early months of the past three or four years and you will realize that it is normal for them to drop at this time of the year.

As the previous poster said this has been a trend many times before. It should and most likely will return to "normal". Its a good time at the moment to pick up a bargain.

well there might be a lot of factors. there was a huge bull run in december up until mid january . there is always bound to be a correction when prices skyrocket . and then there was the FUD about korea banning cryptocurrencies, and china banning mining , and then the hacking of the japanese exchange , and then the whole USDT fiasco. its probably not just one factor , everything comes together to cause the drops . but its crypto and what goes up must come down and vice versa if its a bitconnect type of thing.

I am assuming that you are monitoring the price movements of crypto players at least for last 6 months. As we all know that there was huge rally took place in the price of almost all major coins in that period and those who made profits during the rally are now selling their investments. This is kind of correction process which helps Bitcoin to stabilize the price and grow in the long run.

Some says its a correction others say that its because of the recent news that some countries banning crypto trading. But for me its a common scenario which not to worry.

Does BTC control the market through the price fluctuations? BTC has been running lower in recent weeks and this knock-on effect has been seen in other currencies too. Is the driver from people selling up altcurrency and investing in BTC at a lower price, meaning we are likely to see another rise in BTC prices soon? Or is that a far too simplistic way to look at the market currently?

Some major countries are still confused about bitcoin and other related matters so they are still holding and stopping the used of this digital money... It is one reason of crypto price downfall.

Frauds and false news have driven to collapse the market these sellers panic they do not know how to handle this scenario. They end up selling a large part of their funds. I believe that there are many people who have lost millions with bad investments. Unless they have changed their assets on time.

This is called herd instinct:

New, inexperienced investors panic and sell everything without thinking.

What experienced investors do? They're preparing fiat for shopping!   Wink Cool Grin

It looks like Bitcoin has hit a record low, but you honestly shouldn't worry about it.

Record low?  I sold 35 bitcoins for $10 a piece a few years ago.  $10 is certainly lower than the price it is at now.

No such thing as a "record low" right now, unless you are speaking over a time period.

Bitcoin price do affects many ALTCOINS as most will quickly be converting to btc and sell to avoid more loss when bitcoin is in bearish mode..
