Hi all,

I started playing around with AMD cards as it's getting harder here in the EU to find decent amounts of nVidia cards. So after installing Ubuntu 16.04 and the latest AMD drivers (17.50) I got ~20 MH with Ether.

Code:
m  13:14:26|ethminer  Speed  20.79 Mh/s    gpu/0 20.79  [A0+0:R0+0:F0]

Just for testing I switched to EthOS which yields ~25 MH out of the box. With decent overclocking I can easily push that card to 30 - 31 MH.

In my Ubuntu setup I did install the ROCm components and edited Grub to force Large Page Support (amdgpu.vm_fragment_size=9). And that works:

Code:
root@ubuntu:~/bin# cat /sys/module/amdgpu/parameters/vm_fragment_size
9

Does anyone know what drivers/settings EthOS uses to achieve that hashrate or what should be done on Ubuntu as an initial setup for mining Ether with decent hashrates? Thanks in advance.

Did you tried to change os into windows and try to overclock it? Its more flexible if you use windows 10 pro and manually overclock your rx580 and i think you should get almost 30 Mh/s to 32 mh/s base on my friends rigs.
And let me know if what type of memory you have in rx580?

Thanks for the answer. I'm not really a "windows-guy" and I can easily overclock the card on Linux. It's not about overclocking.

I am only trying to figure out what driver versions and what binaries are used in EthOS so that they achieve 25MH without any overclocking. I get 20MH on Ubuntu with 17.50 drivers.

Ethos uses the OSS drivers but with the opencl components from the closed-source part.
with some patches to really overclock all components.

I used to do this on ubuntu myself, but way to much effort.

That would be hard to find the best driver for your rx580 if you use linux os i don't know in ethos but for me i use windows os for more flexibility like bios mode, undervolt  and overclocking and i think some drivers are also low hashrate that is why there is DDU tool to uninstall the driver to install the old driver or latest driver to find the best driver to get the full potencial of your cards..
Well if you wanted to know some binaries to get the higher potencial of your cards try to ask in ethos thread here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1341641.0

I suggest to test them first in windows os even you are not a windows guy i just telling you to troubleshoot first and try it in windows 10 pro and install the latest driver for your cards use DDU for uninstalling the driver if you get what you wanted to get until you found the best driver.. this is just base on what i experienced..  But i heard that there are miners use crimson relive driver that can gives 25 to 26 mh/s but other driver gives you 20 mh/s
I refer you here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2679630.0

Thank you all for your replies. I want to check if this is simply a matter of drivers so I will rip the drivers from EthOS and move them straight to my Ubuntu installation.

With regards to the use of Windows - I consider this OS to be good for hobbyist with 1-4 rigs in the basement. If one starts going into 100's zone neither Windows nor EthOS is a feasible solution.

I will keep this post updated with my findings.

Ok, this is strange. Just downgraded driver version from 17.50 to suggested 17.40 even though the latter is marked as beta and the hashrate went up to ~24 MH. I combined this with ethminer's "--cl-kernel 1" option and arrived at 26 MH. Now I'm finally set out for overclocking and undervolting. My goal is to get to 31 MH on 90W max.

Code:
m  19:12:21|ethminer  Speed  26.18 Mh/s    gpu/0 26.18  [A0+0:R0+0:F0]
