There are 57 merit sources in this forum, the idea is that every group of ranks got they merit sources( merit sources can be from all ranks, that doesn't mean that Jr. Member will get Jr. Member merit source man). Here is an example ( according to currect merit sources, but it could be changed if we get more merit sources ): Rank | Required activity | Required merit | Merit sources | Brand new | 0 | 0 | 0 | Newbie | 1 | 0 | 0 | Jr Member | 30 | 0 | 7-25 | Member | 60 | 10 | 10-30 | Full Member | 120 | 100 | 10-30 | Sr. Member | 240 | 250 | 15-30 | Hero Member | 480 | 500 | 15-40 | Legendary | Random in the range 775-1030 | 1000 |
Example: *That means if you are Sr. Member and you are appointed to *Member group* source group you can give points only to that group where are you appointed. It doesn't matter from which rank will source man be.* (merit sources can be from all ranks, but they can just give merit to group where they are appointed) - just *Member group* merit source can give merits to Members only. - just *Full Member group* merit source can give merits to Full Members only. etc... The final number of merit sources in the group can be determinated by Admin (theymos), this is just example.

What is the source of this information ? I checked the official thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0 and there is no such information added there. It is hard to believe that there are no sources for Jr Members and newbies as they need merits the most.

Horrible idea that will continue to facilitate account farming and spam. Nothing to see here; move on.

Why it would be a horrible idea if you are in *Members group* merit source, would you give merit to someone for free? I think that Admin determinates who will be merit source. You think that admin will choose the person who will farm accounts with merits.

I take this as a suggestion, right? This suggestion will not work at all. Full Members and below would not be an effective Merit source since they haven't established something relevant to the forum (except to those who are known that is in FM rank). Based from the criteria of being a merit source stated by theymos: If you want to be a merit source:
1. Be a somewhat established member. 2. ... 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.
the most suitable rank to be a merit source is Sr. Member and above. Also, the merit should be given to those who had contributed something relevant and by restricting the giving merit to just within your rank level is horrible. Anyone who deemed a post worthy of Merit should give merit if he wanted to. And what if the Member ranked MS ranked up? He cannot give merits to those who are still Member, right? Thus all merits will be given only to higher ranks in the future unless theymos will appoint again per rank. This idea is full of holes and flaws. This will never happen.

Your post is incredibly misleading. You're implying that you're involved in the merit source decision making or calculations...and you're not. What makes you think that the Moderator team here is looking for suggestions on how this system has worked. Have you read the following? Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.
Sounds like Theymos and team have it covered.

You’ll never get a job with the British government, you’ll need to be an extra politically correct bitch to get one of those. Give your Smerits to women, gays, transgender people & brown people A week long ban if you give Smerit’s to any straight, white males.

My apologies for missing some of your key points (merit sources can be from all ranks, but they can just give merit to group where they are appointed)
That means if you are Sr. Member and you are appointed into Members MS group you can give points only for that group where are you appointed. It doesn't matter from which rank will source man be.. Regardless, limiting a merit source who he can give some smerit/s is just wrong. Take this for instance, you've read a post of a Newbie which is with quality and contributed something relevant to a certain topic. You want to give him merit but you can't since you are only assigned for Member-ranked accounts. Will you even bother to bookmark that post just to give him merit when he got upgraded to Member? No. This is the type of scenario that is being neglected by theymos. I bet he did not even think about this because this will just make the Merit System more complex. The main purpose of Merit is to award people who had been contributing something to this forum. That's why restrictions to whom you want to give your sMerits is not implemented.

But in this suggestion, they can put merit sources for newbies to, so that isn't the problem.Newbies don't need merits to rank up, only Jr. Members and above needs it. This will prevent newbies from making spammy comments, they will realize that they need to give constructive posts before they reach Jr. Member rank. The point is to give merits to users who deserve but what chances are that newbie can create a constructive post if he doesn't know how the forum works. I know that there is maybe 10% percent of newbies who can give constructive post but there is 90% percent who will decide to spam for rank up. Here in this idea, we don't limit merit sources, we are giving focus of merit points for each rank. The point is that merit source provide merits for a group of rank members where he is appointed.
