The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

A little over a year ago when things were going poorly in Cyprus there was talk of people moving into bitcoin.  However, since then bitcoin has not seemed to rally when it would clearly help people in these countries preserve their wealth, at least if they don't buy at the top!   Anyway, it would seem that bitcoin as electronic gold has not yet become popular enough to help out a lot of people that it could.
