数字货币并不是洗钱者所描绘的天堂。当政治领导人声称由于洗钱问题必须监管数字货币时，他们的真正含义是“我们在很大程度上无力防止法定货币洗钱，所以我们将把精力集中在数字货币上。”由于公共区块链的性质和需要现金转换为法币，数字货币更容易监控。最近的一份报告根据追踪比特币生态系统从2013到2016年的资金流动得出结论为，比特币交易不到1％来自非法来源。相比之下，估计全球GDP的2％-5％被用于洗钱。
