Coinbase is reliable but a lot of people also have issues with them.   I haven't had any problems but you may want to Google about all the complaints others have had.

Since you are in the united states,I would say the best way to go is to buy from coinbase since it's reliable but don't keep your funds there,transfer them to an external wallet ( desktop wallet or hardware wallet if you can afford it ; more security)
Don't forget to take security measurements when holding your bitcoin in external wallet ( like electrum per example)

Remember to trade a gdax.com limit orders if you use coinbase.
No fees then and better prices. If you do that coinbase is very good I think.
