Safest and easiest way is to open an account on exchanges which support BTC/LTC pairs like bittrex,which will give you an option to trade between the two,you just need to verify yourself by sending some identity cards,and you are good to go.

Shapeshift looks easy indeed but the minimum is 0.01BTC.

You can use an exchange to convert BTC to LTC. The exchanges with bigger volumes are Bittrex, Binance and Kucoin. If you don’t intend to verify your identity, Binance allows you to withdraw 2 BTC daily and Kucoin doesn’t require identity verification.
