If you intend to embark on a career in non-fiction translation, I suggest that you look into translation memory (TM) software instead of planning to translate by directly editing a word processor or PDF document. TM software is especially useful when repeatedly translating text containing similar phrases. As an example, documents relating to financial compliance are often very similar from one client to another, and TM software can help your work by suggesting suitable translations based on your earlier projects. Should you then, at some later point, work for translation agencies, they will probably even require you to use TM software.
