We met, inside a coffee shop, introduced myself, asked him if he had done trades before.  He said he had done several.  I wanted to make sure he was familiar with how the site worked and then to see if he had any questions about bitcoins in general.  I released the coins, and we started to shake hands as he was handing me the envelope.  He jerked the envelope out of my hand and took off running.

Every person I have met has been awesome and excited about bitcoins.  So I let my guard down.  Showed up wearing flip flops.  I started to pursue after he had already taken 3 steps, but then realized I would not be able to run in flippers for very long and stopped after about 100 yards.


The worst part is that I had my 14 year old daughter with me.  There is a special place in hell for people like this!

I think handcuffs might be necessary for f2f transactions from now on.

I have no idea why people do not do these types of transactions at your local bank lobby that has more then basic security in place. But a coffee shop? That was just asking for trouble and it was an immediate disadvantage for an honest person. 

Seems to me you must have an email address or something to give the police? Or do local bitcoin sellers try to be anonymous for the most part?

Well, banks don't stay open past six.  Coffee shops are always busy.  There were 12 people in the shop when it happened. 

I generally try to go through life expecting my fellow man to be decent.  Unfortunately, I am surprised when they are not.

Not sure what local bitcoins will divulge.  Yes, they like anonymity, the main draw for bitcoin, in my opinion.  Also, the biggest caveat.

File a police report.  Odds are he lives around the area and they will show you mugshots.  You might be able to easily pick him out. 

You can even look up online mugshots and try and find him yourself.

No, the bad thing was that the thief did not get hurt.  Ideally one of the other customers would have tripped him, causing him to sail head first into a wall and be knocked out cold where he could have been detained until the police arrived.
