If you compare Maple's code with the codes of COL, BUCK and others, I'm sure you'll find similar anomolies.
I can't think of a better way to manipulate a coin's availability and market value. Can you ?
Please accept my tip of 1200 MPL, for your this very informative information. (Thats if the client ever connects. lol)

If my investigation does prove to be accurate, and it's possible to mint "normal" amounts of coin simply by running the client with some balance, things could become very interesting for this coin.
Unfortunately I only noticed the strange situation once I'd sent my entire balance to another address/client, so I guess that means I won't be generating any PoS blocks for a while.
For those of you who have any MPL at all, please start your clients - you do NOT need to mine - then wait patiently to see if it starts minting 8 MPL blocks. See the previous msg for some peers to connect to.

1200 MPL SENT ! Thanks Its seems stuck at block 46176. That's the height I'm showing. Looks like I was generating most of the PoS blocks, both today and around 25 days ago (when I last had the client running), but there have been a few others showing up. I was hoping you and a couple of others that seem to have started up would generate further blocks, but nothing seems to be happening yet. Looks like 46174 was the last one my client minted, around 4 hours ago, so there's still at least one other client generating PoS blocks. I guess we just wait. Make sure you leave your client open AND unlocked! edit: 46177 was JUST generated followed by 46178 a few mins later So who's the lucky winner, and what is your transaction list showing?

The client has finally sync'd and there have been 2 PoS blocks since.
This brings us to block 46179.

Up to 46180 now. Very interested to know what shows up in the transaction list for the people who won those blocks. 8+ MPL immature, or 0.0xxxx MPL immature?

Bummer. No 8 MPL for you. I do note that your blocks on 27/12/2013 are PoS (not scrypt mined PoW) and of a sizeable amount, though. My PoS blocks today are definitely 8+, although still showing as immature (oldest one with 39 confirms) [edit: now 40 confirms, changed from immature to generate, and balance gone up by 8.03ish] I wonder if there's some weird bug that only kicks in and causes this behaviour when the network is made up of only a few nodes. Will continue monitoring but I guess things are not going to be quite what I thought. I was all set to start handing out small amounts of MPL to help kick start the elitist chicken and egg network.

Thanks you
It's your lucky day. I've just sent you a whopping 16.048774 MPL (the entire balance on my "lucky" PoS client) to test that the 8+ MPL PoS blocks I won earlier are spendable on the network. txid 4b782880da0925a77a46dd0691362dcffe7673504b8caeb5526f3ca72b4b6d19 - looks like it's gone through, just needs some confirms.

My block number is now at 47401. I had a PoS on the 23rd, sadly it started with a zero. One time I had a DMD show up after that wallet had been opened for a few days (without any mining) - My MPL wallet has been open more or less non stop since about November (with only two one week at a time where it hasn't been open). I can't seem to solo mine and there's no pools that I'm aware of, so I'll just have to sit any wait for the grass to grow. Regards, JG5EmumHEpxvmKtudQ5BnbwerkP1tED77A

My client is at block 47435 right now. I seem to be getting some 0.05xx Maples POS every now and than. Mining does not seem to be possible.
Is there a way to patch the source and fix the negative target spacing problem mentioned by almightyruler? My guess is that there is no dev for Maples so we who hold this coin would have to do this ourselves?

The patch to get mining working again is easy - 30 sec to update the source - but recompiling the EXE for Windows is going to be more involved. It would also cause a hard fork, with those still using the old clients continuing on a separate (incompatible) chain of PoS only blocks... but given how quiet MPL is I don't think that's going to be a big issue.
I'm hoping to fiddle around with a Windows compile for another coin sometime soonish; if I can figure that out then I'll do it for MPL too. I have to figure out github too. Or perhaps someone who's already familiar with compiling coins for Windows could help?

I'm currently working on cross compiling a Windows client for another coin. It's a gigantic pain in the rear - so much more involved than a unix compile - but once I get the first reference client compiled it should be a lot easier to apply the setup to any coin originally based on the Bitcoin/Litecoin/Novacoin source. I can then compile a bugfixed Maples client.
So question... would people want the coin spec left as-is, or should we do something a little more daring like making it PoS only after a certain point? Now's the time to discuss it.
